Jasper’s face was a picture. I couldn’t tell if he was more pissed off at being interrupted or that she’d assumed I’d done the cooking. I laid my hand on his shoulder placatingly.

“No, Jasper cooked for me.”

“Oh,” she commented as she turned around and looked at us. Her face paled as she took in the position we were in. “Ohhh… I’m sorry. Have I interrupted something?”

Jasper went to growl something at her, but I couldn’t let him be mean when she looked so crestfallen at what she’d done.

“It’s okay. We’d just finished.” If I was being honest, I was glad she’d interrupted us. As much as I wanted to enjoy Jasper, I definitely wanted to do that somewhere private. I turned back to Jasper. “We’ll finish this later?”

“Definitely,” he whispered, placing a chaste kiss on my cheek. “I have some duties to attend to, but I will come and find you.” There was a promise that lingered in his eyes and it sent a delicious thrill through me.

I couldn’t wait.

Chapter 17

SASKIA

What a complete and utter doofus. I’d walked straight into the kitchen without even looking and I had clearly interrupted something between Jasper and Lori. I knew there was something between them. They just radiated unreleased sexual tension and sometimes it was so goddamn tangible in the air the rest of us choked on it.

I was happy for Jasper, though. He’d been so miserable for so long, but when he was around Lori, he seemed to be a different person. He was still grumpy and a complete hardass, but at least he sometimes smiled now. That was a good thing.

I was glad Lori was here. Female company was scarce around here and too much testosterone was a real pain in the ass sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, the guys were great. We were a team and had been for many decades, but sometimes a girl just needed some girl time.

“So, what do you do for fun?” I asked Lori as I plated up some of the pasta. I cannot believe that Jasper cooked. And cooked well, judging by the smell of the food. In all my years here, I don’t think I have ever seen him put bread in the toaster. But I suppose vampires don’t really eat…

“Fun? Shit, I can’t even remember what that feels like.”

I could imagine. She’d been dumped here, given a load of powers and told to train with us. “Girl, I hear you. I haven’t been out or gotten any action for months. It is drier than a desert down there, let me tell you.”

She barked out a surprised laugh. “That bad, huh?”

I sat at the island and Lori jumped off the top to sit next to me. It was nice to be able to have the chance to get to know her a bit better. The last few weeks since she’d arrived had been a whirlwind.

“Yep. I’ve not really had any downtime, what with you arriving and the witches going missing. I think the last time I had a proper night out was probably about four months ago.”

“That’s criminal.”

“I hear ya.”

I dug into the pasta and moaned. Holy shit, that was good. Lori disappeared into her thoughts as I came the closest to an orgasm I’d been in months. This food was ridiculously good. Jasper was hiding one hell of a talent there.

“Let’s do it.”

I choked on a mouthful. Shit. Did she mean what I think she meant? “Do what?”

“Let’s go out.” Her eyes lit up with complete utter fucking mischief.

I blanched. I was going to get into a world of trouble if something happened to her.

“I don’t think that’s such a good idea.”

“Oh, come on,” she pleaded. “It will be great fun. You’re not on patrol tonight, are you?”

I shook my head dubiously. “Nope, I have a free evening.”

“Perfect! I’m sure Rae would come with us. We could have a proper girl’s night out and I will even be your wingman.” She grinned like the devil. I was so tempted but I didn’t have a death wish.

“Unlike you, Jasper will definitely have my head. You’re not even supposed to go off base.”
