“Liana’s pregnancy was difficult but Marissa was so happy to have another baby. When she found out it was going to be a girl,” he stopped and smiled, “she was so damn happy. She wanted to have a little girl to play dress-up with, and to love and teach her recipes. It was a long pregnancy, a hard one. After she gave birth to Liana, the doctors told us there was no way Marissa would have other children. So, we cherished the two we had.Marissa knew that life within the mafia was not going to be easy. She didn’t want to raise someone who was weak and terrified. We taught Liana to stand up for herself, to fight, to be heard, but also to know when to bide her time, when to wait and be patient.”
Enzo got to his feet and walked over to the window.“Liana did not want to marry you, but she did because it was her duty. She was the one that was chosen, and I advised her that you didn’t want a hard wife. You wanted a good wife.A nice wife.Someone who was agreeable.I told her to behave as such, to never make waves, and if she did that, in time, it would lead to a good marriage with respect and possibly love.”
“I don’t do love.”
Enzo held his hands out.“I didn’t either, but with the right woman, you would be surprised what you would do.Liana will not be easy. You have hurt her, and I promise you, Diego, if you continue to hurt her, I will take matters into my own hands.”
“Are you threatening me?”Diego asked.
“I am telling you that until you are a father, you will not know what this is like. But make no mistake, diablo or not, hurt my little girl, and I will fucking castrate you. Now, you better fucking fix this, because I don’t want to have to explain to Francesco why we’re going to break the no-divorce streak.”He got to his feet.“You’ll find Liana in the pool.”
With that, Diego knew he was dismissed. This was an unusual feeling to him.He was used to gaining the respect of everyone around him.The person they were describing as Liana was not a woman he knew. The wife he had was the woman that smiled at him when he came home, offered him a drink, and would demand the chef change the menu to whatever he wanted.Wherever he wanted to go, they went. She didn’t cause a fuss, and would always give him space. She made no demands on him.
Now, as he made his way to the pool area, which was another room off the house, he stepped into the main room and watched as Liana took several laps in the pool.
There was no one else in residence, and for a second, he just stood there and admired. When it came to his wife, he had no problem with the way she looked. He loved to sink his fingers into her long blonde hair and twirl the strands as he drove balls-deep inside her.The sex was good.Amazing, even.
Considering the pain she had on his initial thrust on their wedding night, she had been more willing than he anticipated to have sex again. The sex was not a problem between them. She could even be pregnant now, seeing as when he was bored with her, he did just tend to fuck her. That was what made life easier—fucking his wife until he didn’t have to worry about anything else.
Liana came to a stop, placed both her hands on the edge of the pool, and turned to glare at him.
“What do you want?”she asked.
Her lack of respect surprised him and actually turned him on.
Chapter Three
Swimming helped toclear her mind.At least, it used to help clear her mind, whereas now, it wasn’t exactly helping at all.
Liana had known the moment Diego had entered the room.Besides the fact the door beeped when someone entered the room, she could also sense him.Her father had installed the beep as a security measure.Several years ago, a couple of his enemies had been able to sneak onto the property, kill a few of the soldiers, and get inside the house.Every door beeped as you went in or out of the house. It was great, until someone wanted to go outside to sneak a cigarette. That was her brother, and it tended to wake her up when it happened.
Liana had actually been in the pool when the two men had broken into the house. It had been dark, and she had eased beneath the water so none of them could see her. She’d been the one to send the alert to her father and grab one of the guns from the secure case.
According to Enzo Jr., she did not have a kill, however, she believed she did.She had taken down one of the masked men, and her brother the other, but he had claimed both deaths. She refused to argue with him. They had killed bad men.
Not that death was easy to deal with. She acted all tough in front of her father and brother, but she had gone to the bathroom and vomited.Afterward, she also had nightmares, and thinking back to that, she had a feeling that was why her brother had claimed both kills. So, she didn’t have to deal with it.The truth was, she didn’t know if she had killed anyone or not.She kept replaying the whole thing in her head, but she didn’t know if she had shot her gun, or if her brother had shot more than one bullet. She was a good shot when the target wasn’t moving.Either way, that had been a long time ago.
