“The thing is, Katherine, not only am I serious but I want you to be my wife. I know you may not feel the same right now, but I think you will in time.”

I begin to laugh. It might be hysteria though.

“Payment for what I did, is marrying you?”

Matvey nods and plucks the ring from its snug velvet pillow.

“Say yes,zhar-ptitsa.”

I consider him for a moment. I never in a million years dreamt that I’d get married. It’s not that I didn’t want to, but who marries a dancer from a strip club? Who wants someone like me as their wife?

“Please say yes so I can continue protecting you.”

“I want you to marry me because you love me, not because you want to protect me,” I say, taking a step back.

“Can’t you see that?” he asks, reaching for my left hand. “To protect you is to love you. To claim you is to love you. To be with you is to love you.”

Matvey

For an awful moment she is so quiet that I question if she is even breathing. Then she lets out a shuddering breath and I exhale too.

“Marry me, be my wife, the mother of my children. I’ll make sure you never need to burn down anything again, and if you do, I’ll be right by your side burning it down with you.”

“You’re insane,” she mutters, her eyes still on the ring as though it will disappear if she dares look away.

“So you keep saying. Maybe you could be insane with me?”

Now she really laughs, not the high, tight sound like before, but full and rich.

She lets me slip the ring onto her finger, even though her hands are trembling.

“Is that a yes?” I ask as I slide it as far as it will go.

She nods, “Yes.”

“What swayed you?” I ask, genuinely surprised.

“You left the elevator unlocked. I could have left.”

“I programmed it this morning.” I lift my hand to her cheek, tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “Why didn’t you?”

She shrugs as she leans into my touch. “There was nowhere else I wanted to be.”

“There are a few conditions.” I sigh because I know she thinks I’m insane, but she is about to see where I get it from. “My father insists it has to be a Russian Orthodox wedding, and he wants us to have our first child within the year, the second within a year after that.”

“Matvey,” she says, pulling back from me a little, tilting her face up so she can see my eyes. “We don’t even know if everything is working properly for me down there. After three years of…what if I can’t give you an heir?”

“We’ll figure it out, right?”

“Are you sure you want this?” she asks. “I’m not like other women.”

“Don’t I know it.” I drop my mouth to hers and kiss her lightly, pouring everything I am into it. “That’s why I know you’re perfect for me.”

I switch places with her, turning us so her back is against the wall, and sink to my knees. It’s easy to pull her leggings and panties down as I go.

“Lift your leg over my shoulder,” I say and she does exactly as I ask while I inhale her scent until I’m dizzy.

When I close my mouth over her cunt, she shivers with a low moan. “You can’t fix everything with that mouth of yours, Matvey,” she says.
