You know what onefire extinguisher does against roaring flames? Bugger all. Seriously, it almost cleared enough of a path to get through to the other side of the room, and that’s when my insane husband charged through the remainder of the flames, and disappeared out of sight.
“MICRO!”
Stitch caught my arm, because I almost ran into the fire after him. I couldn’t hear Micro if he shouted back, because the fire was roaring, and my ears were filled with the sound. What if he was hurt? What if he was dying back there? What if I lost him, right when our future was truly beginning?
“Soph, just hold back, and let him do what he’s gonna do. He made it through, I promise,” Stitch said, holding me back against his side. I should have stayed with Cammy, I know that, but Micro was risking his life to get us out, and I wasn’t leaving him to do that alone.
“He needs my help,” I practically screamed at Stitch, and he nodded, keeping that tight grip on me with one arm, the otherpractically hanging at his side. Had he injured it during all of the madness out there?
“He’s got this, okay? There’s a reason we made him President. He’s smart, he’s resourceful, and he’s got balls of fucking steel. I’d never tell him that myself, but he’s got our backs. I know he’ll get us out.”
There was a sudden gush of sound from the other side of the fire, and the fire started dissipating right in front of our eyes, as Micro fought it from the other side. As soon as there was a gap, he tossed another extinguisher through, and I grabbed it.
“I’ll do it, Sophie,” Stitch said, trying to take it from me.
“With one fucking arm?”
He cursed, and fisted his good hand in the back of my clothes.
“Don’t get too close. I’m dragging you back if you’re at risk.”
We were all at risk, and not just from the flames. The smoke was making us all cough now, and that was the danger for us. Smoke would kill us before flames even reached the back rooms where Cammy and Lissa were.
I appreciated Stitch trying to keep me safe, but if we didn’t make headway, we were all going to die, so I kept on aiming at the fire where I could now see Micro fighting it from the other side.
“As soon as we have a gap, you guys need to jump through. These are the only ones we have, and they’re gonna run out!” Micro yelled desperately, so I turned to Stitch immediately.
“Get Cammy and Lissa. We need to run as soon as he says.”
He reluctantly released the back of my shirt, but leaned close. “Please don’t get burned, Sophie. Protect that baby you’re carrying.” Huh? I turned to watch him hurry into the office. He knew? Micro told him? I thought they weren’t close anymore, but that had to be a good sign, right?
“Soph! NOW! Come on, baby, run through the fire.”
I froze, staring at the flames that licked the air between Micro and me, and I could see they were the lowest they’d probably get, but I couldn’t do it. I could talk the big talk, but I was frozen in fear now that I had to live up to it.
“BABE! NOW!”
Suddenly Stitch was there, shoving Lissa’s hand in mine.
“Get her through. We’re right behind you, Sophie. Don’t lose us this chance.”
It was the kick up the ass that I needed. With the almost empty fire extinguisher in one hand, and Lissa’s life in the other, I ran to my man, hopping over the flames, and crashing into him, bringing his sister with me.
“Baby! Thank god!” Micro held me close against him, holding Lissa with both of us, and I could feel him trembling with adrenaline, and god knows what else.
“I was so scared,” I told him, but he was already moving us, and helping Cammy, as Stitch brought her with him.
“We need to get the fuck out of here. I don’t have anything else to put out these flames. We’re gonna lose the fucking building, and everything in the offices as it is.”
Stitch was already leading Cammy outside, so we stuck with them, and walked out into another complete fucking mess.
Has-Been
When in doubt, getinked. Rules to live by. Rocket was a fucking master with the ink, a genius, and I’d proudly wear his designs forever, I mean, it was permanent, after all.
“I love it! It’s perfect!” Elise was giggling beside me, and hearing her so happy was my new drug in life. The itch and tickle of the tattoo gun on my chest felt like teasing fingers, like foreplay before the main event, but that also felt kinda weird to me, because I wasn’t into Rocket like that. I was into Elise, only Elise, and I wanted to be inside her right now.
“Dude, I can tat your boner too if you want?” Rocket was laughing gleefully, and I felt my cheeks redden. I had a boner while I was getting tatted? Fuck me. I saw Elise eyeing my pants, and biting her lip.
