Briefly, I explained what Brecklyn had told ma and when I finished, determined fury filled both their faces.
“If someone did that to my Emma, retribution would be the least of their worries.”
“Do you know this asshole’s name?” Kaz asked.
“She didn’t tell me.”
“I’ll find out. Maks can hack in and find out anything I can’t find out. He’ll be dealt with by the end if the week. And the others?”
“Her family can have a taste of what they dealt her.”
Kaz nodded. “Financial decimation. Got it. I’ll get [brother’s name on it]. Regular financials are boring. He lives for shit like this. Aside from the doctor and the guilty staff at Core Medical, I’ll dig up any dirt her family might be hiding too.”
“Good.” With Kaz on the job, it was as good as done.
“If you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to the clinic,” he said as he stood.
“Everything going well?” I asked.
“If the sixths would stop sticking their dicks in anything that walks and getting STDs, it would be a lot better. This crop are stupid fucks.” He looked at Aslan. “You’re gonna need to do some recruiting because this group is gonna kill themselves off. Do better.”
“Fuck off. What the fuck you want me to do call a meeting from our nonexistent HR?”
“Or something,” Kaz grunted, before walking toward the door. “The next one who comes in claiming it must be some sort of virgin infection, I’m shooting him.”
I tried not to laugh as he left. Honestly, I had no doubt he might pull his weapon of one of them.
After a moment, Aslan looked back at me, ready to get back to business. “I have a line on Rad.”
“Tell me.”
“Have you read your messages?”
“No.” Since Brecklyn woke, I hadn’t been in the encrypted system, trusting Aslan to keep things going while I was otherwise occupied. I knew we had more problems the Bernardis, but Aslan would text or call me if I was needed immediately.
“He’s been spotted with a man from the Bernardis. He disappeared before my men could grab him.”
“Blyat. As if they weren’t enough of a pain in the ass. Do you have more on the attempted hit on you?”
A muscle ticked in his jaw, and I knew I wouldn’t like his news.
“Tell me,” I ordered.
He sighed. “Look… I don’t know how to tell you this or who in particular ordered the hit, but all the intel leads to the inner circle. To the family.”
“No.”
Grimly, he went on to explain everything he’d learned, There were no questions. The trail led directly to the family. The only questions were who and how would I deal with them when I found out.
Chapter 12
Brecklyn
My fingers trailed along the wood trim at the edge of the hallway’s wainscoting as I walked down the first floor hallway. The library that would make Belle fromBeauty and the Beastjealous was located in the first floor of the mansion’s east wing. It was my favorite place to be when I wasn’t in physical therapy or bothering Zlata, the cook, in the kitchen.
Over the past three weeks, my days had taken on a rhythm. Valariy brought me coffee in the morning before disappearing for most of the day. For the first week, a nurse had come to help me, but by the second week, I was steady on my feet and doing well enough without her.
Every morning, I had physical therapy and that would be done tomorrow, too. Then I would wander into the kitchen. Zlata, the cook, was a regular mother hen, but she ran her kitchen with an iron fist. At first, she just sat me on one of the high-backed stools at the counter. Soon, however, she handed over vegetables or fruits to peel and cut. Occasionally, she shoved bread to knead at me.
