I nodded, my lip pulled between my teeth. “I’m sorry you missed it.”

“I’m not.”

Stepping back, he dropped my hand. The loss of his warmth was heavy.

“Though I am sorry that you forgot to mention your dad was my coach and one of my biggest rivals is your brother.”

Yeah, I was too.

CHAPTER SIXTY-SEVEN

We’re about to fight

WILL

The car ride home was silent – like could hear a pin drop silent. Riley was toying with the hem of the hoodie I’d given her. When we’d been leaving the hospital, she’d only been dressed in her running shorts and a crop. Her running jacket had been ruined by the bite. I’d handed her my hoodie without a second thought. It came midway down her thigh, and the bulky sleeves concealed the bandage on her forearm.

With three of us having turned up, I hadn’t known whether I would be the one taking Riley home. But when the doctor had returned with the sepsis checklist, Riley had handed it straight to me.

I pulled up to the curb in front of Riley’s house because Tanner’s car was parked in the drive.

To add another revelation to the night of fucking revelations, he was officially dating Parker. He’d already been driving into town to see her when Riley’s-dad-slash-my-coach had called to say Riley had been taken to hospital.

I put my car in park but left the ignition running. Riley made no move to get out either. She knew what was about to happen, but first I had to check on her.

“Are you feeling okay?”

She nodded.

“Good because we’re about to fight.”

She angled her body so she was facing me. “Okay.”

I couldn’t hold it in any longer. “What the fuck, Riley?”

My voice come out so harsh that she flinched.

“I’m sorry,” she choked.

She was definitely going to cry, which I hated. When Riley cried, all I wanted to do was make her feel better. But I was about to be the one making her feel a hell of a lot worse.

She blinked away the tears already pooling in her steel blue eyes before taking an encouraging breath. “My relationship with my dad is complicated. He was checked out practically my entire childhood because hockey has always been his priority, even after retirement because he started coaching.”

“And you couldn’t tell me this because...”

“Because I’ve spent my entire life distancing myself from the famous Bryce Hall. I didn’tplanon keeping that from you too. The secret just snowballed.” She wrung her hands nervously. Every part of her body was tense. “It’s not like you would’ve loved the idea of sleeping with your coach’s daughter.”

I wouldn’t have merely beensleepingwith my coach’s daughter. Even back then, I wasin lovewith my coach’s daughter.

I took a calming breath, literally biting my tongue. This could easily turn into a rabbit hole of arguments.

“Why didn’t you at least tell me about Tanner?”

She shrugged, defeated. “How could I without covering off on dad too?”

I remained silent, gesturing for Riley to elaborate. I still had no clue how they were all linked together.

“Dad got Tanner’s mum pregnant in college. Around the same time he cheated on her with my mum. Those are the exciting events that led to me being born.”
