Evan’s mattress was also too firm, and the pillows were too thin. I appreciated that he’d done me a solid by giving me a place to crash – especially since it meant he hadn’t been able to entertain another girl – but here’s hoping I didn’t need to call in the favour again tonight.
Now that my judgement wasn’t impaired from beer pong, his theory was starting to feel less and less likely. Ryker hadn’t brought up last night while we watched a movie in his room this afternoon. In fact, he hardly spoke at all, choosing to scroll through his phone while the action-packed thriller had played out.
I was beginning to fear I’d played along with Evan’s delusions because, deep down, I wanted him to be right. I wanted Ryker tohave a thing for me, or at the very least, to own up to the reason he’d kissed me in the first place.
Picking a sock up off the floor, I climbed onto Ryker’s bed. He’d gone downstairs for a glass of water, but that was close to thirty minutes ago. Either the guy was ridiculously thirsty, or he was avoiding me.
Just as I threw the sock towards the fan – missing terribly – he ambled back into his room. He was dressed in a simple tee and a pair of jeans, the hems cuffed to show off his sneakers.
He was a sneaker guy. He had more shoes than I did.
“Will you hate me if I bail tonight?” I asked.
He frowned. “Why would you bail?”
“I’m tired.”
His jaw twitched. “Didn’t get much sleep last night, huh?”
“No. As a matter of fact, I didn’t.”
Stalking to his closet, he pulled on a corded overshirt before rifling through his caps. Black would look best with his fit, but I wasn’t about to tell him that.
“Joey Nazaar is expecting you,” he murmured.
In all honestly, I’d completely forgotten about Joey last night. I could barely deal with Ryker, let alone Evan and Joey too.
Being single wasn’t easy.
I caught Ryker’s eye through the mirror. “Would it bother you if I hooked up with Joey?”
Ryker stilled with his hands clutching a navy cap. “Why would it? It’s not like you haven’t hooked up with one of my teammates before.”
Ouch. That felt like a dig.
I’d told him at the diner nothing had happened between Evan and me. But for some reason, he was choosing not to believe it.
I knew Evan wanted me to play along for a little while longer, but I couldn’t. Lying didn’t sit well with me.
“Why are you being so grouchy, Wheels?”
“I’m not.”
“You are. You’ve been short with me all day. Tell me what’s up.”
With a huff, Ryker settled on a beige hat before facing me. “It’s not my business who you hook up with, Rubz.”
Something inside me snapped, like the last thread of a hairband after being stretched too many times around a ponytail.
“Not even when that person is you, right?”
Ryker’s face drained of colour. That was the closest either of us had come to acknowledgingthe kiss.Judging by his expression, I shouldn’t have bothered.
“Rubz–”
I didn’t give him a chance to stumble his way through some bullshit apology. Swiping my purse from the bed, I stormed from his room.
I shouldn’t have come this weekend. I’d hoped it would smooth things over between us, but it was having the complete opposite effect.
