My boss hesitated for a moment as the faint rumble of thunder drifted through the single pane glass of the old building.

‘It’s supposed to pour with rain,’ I added.

‘Fair enough. You two win. Although how you got the weather to collude with you, I don’t know.’

Finn tapped the side of his nose. ‘Some things have to remain a secret.’

‘Are you sure you don’t need me for anything, Lizzie?’

‘No, I’m fine. I’ll message if I do. But please go home and rest.’

As she nodded, Finn and I saw tears glistening in her eyes. ‘Bloody hormones,’ she said as she rummaged in a pocket then dried her eyes and blew her nose with the tissue she’d pulled out, giving me a wave as she did so. As they left, Finn glanced over his shoulder and gave me a wink.

‘Right,’ I said, turning back to my 3000-year-old friend, ‘you need to help me knuckle down here and distract me from perhaps the hottest man I’ve ever met.’

Still nothing.

‘Yes, OK,thehottest man I’ve ever met.’

You never answered me.

I was typing up my notes when my phone lit up with a message.

About what?

I felt the smile on my face at the simple communication. This was ridiculous, I told myself. But I didn’t stop smiling.

Dinner. Tonight.

Oh. Yes. Well we got a bit distracted…

Finn sent a little devil face emoji followed by a winky one.

Dinner sounds lovely. Thanks.

Great. I’ve got a meeting off site this afternoon but I can pick you up after that. Seven?

I can get the Tube.

I’d rather pick you up. It’s gives me more time with you.

OK. Thank you.

A row of grinning faces appeared before his next message.

Have a good afternoon. See you later xx

And you. Hope the meeting goes well.

Xx

‘No Finn this afternoon?’ Bella asked, glancing over at the empty desk as she waited for me to look over a query.

‘No,’ I replied without looking up. ‘Some meeting or other.’

She plonked herself on the corner of my desk. Her sartorial choices today were more casual than they had been since Finn had started and I wondered if she was, hopefully, turning her attentions elsewhere. I still felt awkward whenever I thought too much about the fact that Finn and I were seeing each other, knowing that Bella was interested in him. Both Colette and Finn had told me I was worrying too much. He wasn’t interested in her, and rationally I knew that, but I’d be happier if she decided he wasn’t all that great after all. Even though I knew for a fact he most definitely was – and more.

‘Do you still see Friedrich?’
