‘Bella has rather the crush on you. You must have noticed!’
His frown deepened. ‘Bella?’
‘Yes.’
‘Since when?’
‘Since about two seconds after she saw you.’
‘Oh.’
‘Yes. Oh. Hence my question.’
‘And why are you interested?’ There was a hint of a smile now, his dark look turning quizzical.
I gave another eye roll. ‘Don’t flatter yourself. The only reason I’m asking is because she’s spending so much time mooning over you that I’m only getting half as much work out of her.’
‘So you thought… what?’
‘If you ask her out, she might be able to concentrate more.’
‘I’m not entirely sure I follow your logic. You think if I take her out, she will automatically be able to focus more?’
‘Maybe. It might be worth a try.’
‘No.’ He picked up his glasses and slipped them back on his face, signalling that the conversation, as far as he was concerned, was over.
‘Why not?’ I asked. ‘Are you seeing someone?’
‘Nope,’ he replied, typing away without looking up.
‘So why not? She’s really nice, intelligent, attractive and worships the ground you walk on.’
‘She doesn’t know me.’
‘Apparently that doesn’t matter but she will if you ask her out.’
‘As I said, no.’
‘Why not?’ I asked again.
He let out another sigh, this time visibly more impatient than the initial one.
‘Because,’ he took off the glasses again and fixed his gaze on me, ‘she’s not my type.’
I opened my mouth to protest on Bella’s behalf. As I saw it, it was the perfect solution. Bella finally gets the date she wants and Finn gets a date with a young, bright, attractive woman with legs up to her armpits.
‘She’s too young for a start.’
I shut my mouth. Momentarily.
‘I did mention that and she said she didn’t mind.’
‘I wasn’t aware you’d been discussing me.’
It was my turn to shrug.
‘Did it occur to you thatImight mind?’
