‘Yes, I suppose so.’
‘You can’t control the outcome?’
I laughed. ‘No, unfortunately. I’d be a rich woman if I could.’
‘Then perhaps learn from that. Life can’t be controlled. It just happens. And we deal with what we find when we find it.’
I rested my chin in my hands, pondering her words.
‘That’s very profound.’
‘I know. I’m rather proud of myself.’
‘You should be. You’re very wise.’
‘This is true,’ she replied with a nonchalant flick of her wrist.
A smile tugged at the corner of my lips. ‘What would I do without you?’
‘Luckily we don’t have to find out because you are, how do you say, stuck with me.’
I reached over and hugged her. ‘Good.’
‘So when are you seeing Finn next?’
‘I’ll see him at work, of course, but other than that, we haven’t really arranged anything. I’m just “going with the flow”.’
Colette clinked her wine glass against mine. ‘Make it soon. He’s good for you.’
‘You think so?’
‘I know so.’
‘We’ll see.’
‘We will indeed.’
Bent over an artefact that had recently come into our possession after the clearance of a large manor house, I became aware of a presence beside me. My boss was eager to report to the board any information we could gain about the item since we had little knowledge of its provenance and she had already been in twice this morning to see if I’d come up with anything.
‘Still working on it,’ I said without looking up.
‘So I see.’ Unless Inis had developed a severe throat infection, I was pretty sure that the deep voice didn’t belong to my boss. The flutter in my stomach confirmed it.
‘Hello,’ I said, as I straightened from the bent position I’d been in and stretched my back.
‘Hello,’ Finn replied, smiling. ‘Am I interrupting?’
‘Yes, but it’s not unwelcome. I could do with a break.’
‘You free for lunch?’
I glanced at my watch. A basic one that told the time and did bugger all else, a fact that I liked very much. The thought of a smart watch pinging, buzzing and vibrating all the time when I was trying to get on with things gave me the shivers.
‘I can be.’
‘Good.’ Finn glanced over his shoulder before bending and kissing me straight on the lips.
‘Finn!’ I stepped back. ‘We said not at work!’ My words were whispered but my tone was vehement.
