‘I just told you.’
‘Finn, I’m tired. Can we talk about this tomorrow?’
‘At work? Or do you want me to meet you three streets away in a café no one from work will ever go to?’
‘What’s up with you?’ I snapped.
‘I’m fed up of not knowing where I stand with you.’
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
Finn pulled the car to the side of the road before turning to face me. ‘You wanted to get out of there tonight so that Bella wouldn’t see us together.’
I opened my mouth to reply.
‘The truth, Elizabeth.’
‘OK, yes. I did.’
‘Why?’
‘I already told you.’
‘No, you didn’t.’
‘It’s not professional.’
‘I don’t even work for the museum!’ He threw up his hands. ‘There’s nothing in your contract to say you can’t date colleagues anyway, even if I was.’
‘How the hell do you know what’s in my contract?’
‘Inis told me when I took her home that day.’
‘Why? And while we’re on the subject, who the hell gave you permission to tell her about us?’
‘I didn’t. She’s not stupid. She knew.’
‘How?’
‘I don’t know, but she did. And you know what? I’m glad.’
‘Well I’m not!’ I snapped out before thinking.
Finn’s brow flickered into a frown before his face cleared of all expression and he turned back to the wheel. ‘I’ll take you home.’
My stomach twisted and I felt the deliciously rich food of earlier now sitting leaden in it.
‘I didn’t mean that the way it sounded.’
‘It’s fine, Elizabeth. It’s been a long day and I get you’re upset about your ex fiancé and Bella.’
‘My veryexfiancé and no, not in the way you think.’
‘How do you know what I think, Elizabeth?’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Have you any idea what I think about things? Or do you just assume that I couldn’t possibly understand that you’re upset because, not only has your ex been selected for a position that you feel should have been yours, but he’s also rubbed it in byoffering a place in the team to a member of your own staff. And done so by charming her at a restaurant he refused to take you to.’
