‘Thanks. I’ll bear it in mind for my next job.’
I shuffled on the sofa, snuggling in more towards Finn, who responded by wrapping his closest arm around me, laying the other across my legs which were now hooked over his long, outstretched ones.
‘What is your next project, do you know?’
There was a pause before he replied, and he shifted position slightly. ‘No, not really. There’s a few things I’m looking into that have been floated in my direction but I’m undecided at present.’
‘Do you mind that?’
‘What?’
‘Being a contractor? Self-employed. Would you rather have the security of a set position within a company?’
‘Is that any more secure these days?’ he asked, flipping the TV back off mute now that the adverts were ending.
‘I suppose not.’
‘I like the variety. I get to pick and choose to work on whatever project interests me the most. It’s good.’
I leant my head against his chest, listening to the slow, steady rhythm of his heart. ‘I’m glad you chose to do your current one.’
Finn’s cuddle tightened around me. ‘Me too. This has been the most rewarding and interesting job I’ve ever had.’
I smiled against him and focused back on the enthusiastic engineer on the television, currently swinging underneath a bridge on a harness and appearing to love every moment of it.
Rather him than meI thought as I snuggled deeper into Finn and closed my eyes, soothed by his heartbeat.

‘How do you feel about a weekend away?’
I looked up from the screen, having just hung up from yet another Teams meeting. Video calls were all very well and did save time and travel when the participants were remote but nothing was quite as good as being in the same room together. It was certainly harder to build a rapport with people through a screen than it was when meeting in person.
‘Huh?’
Finn placed a much-needed cup of coffee in front of me and then rested against the edge of the desk. He took a sip from his own mug before he spoke again. ‘A weekend away. You and me. What do you think?’
‘When?’
The broad shoulders shrugged. ‘This weekend?’
My brows raised. ‘Not one for planning things in advance, are you?’
‘I spend my working life planning things to the nth degree. Outside of that, I’m inclined to be a little more spontaneous.’
‘I suppose that makes sense.’
‘So?’
I made some notes from the meeting before looking up again. ‘Umm, yes I guess.’
Finn gave a chuckle. ‘Don’t sound too enthused.’
I laid down my pen and concentrated on him. ‘Sorry. My mind was elsewhere.’
‘Everything OK?’
‘Yes, just coordinating the items we’re getting on loan and we’ve just agreed to lend an exhibit to the Met in New York so there’s rather a lot on at the moment.’
