ChapterTwelve

“What’swrong?” Rein snagged Braelyn’s arm when she stumbled on the uneven sidewalk.

“Damn boots. The heels are too high.”

“You look good.” The words slipped from Rein’s mouth before he could clamp down his lips.

“I do?”

“Yeah.”

The black leather skirt hung from her hips, revealing a lot of skin, a flat stomach, a tempting navel.

That’s where I’ll start. My tongue will circle her belly button before dipping lower. I’ll slide my hands under the sweater, cup her breasts while my thumbs flick her nipples, making them tight, hard buds. Once she is so fucking wet she drips, I’ll mount her, slam my cock into her pussy, and drink from her neck until she screams.Damn.

Braelyn tucked into the crook of Rein’s elbow. “Thanks. You’ve known you were an Aeternal for—” she counted on her fingers “—over two hundred years, but my father’s news is a lot to take in. It’s the cover-up that bothers me most. Finding out this way is…”

Rein nodded, his gaze wandering to four males who approached several blocks away. Their strides were long, determined.

“…and I’m not prepared to be a witch.”

“Good, because you’re not one,” he murmured, distracted by the Aeternals. The tallest walked in front, arms swinging, fists clenched. An incubus.

“I know he was trying to protect me. Still…”

Alert, Rein observed their unblinking eyes. The surrounding air rippled with their anticipation.

“…damn, I am an adult who…”

“Too much talking.” Rein held up a hand. The males were on a mission.

The tall incubus, a warlock, and two demons shut off their path in a blink.

Fuck.

Brae was a distraction. As an experienced Firebrand, he should have spotted the walking bags of dick sooner. All he could do now was compute the options. He could scoop Braelyn up and D-chip a portal, but the mage blocked that action. Rein could shadowflash until he reached safety, but that was a solo act. No passengers. So, stand-and-fight was the plan.

He pulled in front of Braelyn, a solid wall of muscle between her and the attackers.

Protectmessaged to every nerve in his body.

“I know him.” Brae’s fingers on his back were a branding iron, burning through his shirt.

He snapped his head around. “What?”

But her answer didn’t matter because the males chose that second to charge.

Braelyn would be exposed. No cock-blocking, as Ram called it, because Rein could only keep one spell in motion at a time. He also couldn’t maintain it and go vamp on their asses. Only one breed power at a time. So, the game was simple.

Remove the spell on Brae. Unfuck the situation.

Rein’s palm shot out to cast a blocking spell. The tall blond-haired incubus directed a bitter smile his way, motioning his buddies to spread out. If they scattered far enough apart, the spell could not keep all four at bay. The asshole knew it.

Rein snatched a US Marine Raider-styled stiletto from his sheath. The blade was a special Firebrand make. Iron for demons, silver for vampires, wolfram for other breeds. He handed it off to Braelyn, drawing another for himself.

His tone matter-of-fact, Rein fixed on the attackers. “Brae, keep the knife pointed forward. Do anything to survive. Use any dirty tricks you know. I had to drop the shield around you, but these assholes are dead men walking.”

The four males circled, shifting into position with mincing steps. Though Braelyn kept her back against his, a hand clutched to his shirt, her tremors vibrated across his skin.Hell. He was going to enjoy killing these assholes.
