“I’d like to be your friend,” said Indigo.

“I’d like that, too.” Braelyn busied herself looking through cabinets in the kitchen, flinging open doors, searching the shelves. “Where does he keep the tea?”

“Not sure he has any.”

Braelyn gave up when she didn’t find any.

“Let’s just have whiskey then.”

“I’m not much of a drinker.” Braelyn returned to the living room, where Indigo was foraging.

“Nonsense. You’re going to need a drink soon. I think.”

“Me? Why?”

“Oh, look. Here’s a bottle and two glasses. Neat, right?” Once she plopped them on top of the liquor cabinet, she poured Rein’s good Demon Scourge into the large tumblers.

“How do you know?”

“Lucky guess.”

“So tell me, how’s the cancer thing?” Indigo sat on the couch, curling her legs under her rear, swallowing a big gulp of her drink. “Ah. Bracing.”

“How do you know I have cancer? I guess Alarik told you. It’s not something I like to talk about.” Braelyn parked herself in a chair across from the witch, glass in hand.

“I can’t blame you. So, how is it?”

Resigned, Braelyn sighed, shrugging her shoulders. “Not great, but I’ll beat it.”

“Thatta girl. New subject. What about Rein?”

“What about him?”

“Well, you were talking about how my nephew’s hung like a stallion.”

“No. No. I wasn’t.” Braelyn fought a blush.

“We’ll get back to that subject later. For now, I came to blab about Boyo.”

Braelyn had no intention of sharing info on their sex life.

“I don’t want to talk about your sex life, dear. At least, not right now.”

“Can you read minds?”

“I don’t think so. What are you thinking?”

Braelyn shook her head. “Forget it.”

“There are some things to know about Rein. I appointed myself to tell you because that scamp will never talk about himself.”

“I don’t want to pry.”

“That’s so sweet, chickadee … though not true.” She patted the cushion beside her. “Sit here. You must know this story so you’ll stand by him.”

Braelyn unfolded from the chair, clutching her drink. “It’s impossible for us to be together very long.” She settled next to Indigo.

“Funny. That was a possible future I saw in the river. Another wastresdifferent.”
