They blasted for the wall. Celene dropped toone knee, cupping her palms together. Jace stepped into her handsand was flipped up in nearly the same motion, tossed by her fellowprisoner to the top of the wall.

Jace barely caught the blocks, hanging on byfingertips. Struggling to get a foothold while straining hermuscles, she pulled herself onto the uppermost ledge.

Celene didn’t wait for her partner’s escape. She charged toward the guard, prepared for him to awaken.

When Jace flopped to the other side, thehulk woke up.

Probably his super hearing.

Celene toppled his chair with a kick. Shestraddled his chest, locking her arms around his neck. Her goal wasto hold him down by any means possible for as long as possible.

Jace had to make it to freedom. Since shewas the faster runner, she’d do it. She’d taste freedom for both ofthem. Celene just had to provide her with time to get away.

At first, the guard was shocked, toosurprised to free himself. When he began to fight in earnest,Celene held on. He landed a solid punch to her jaw, tears stingingher eyes from the sharp pain.

She held on.

He gripped both of her wrists, rising, herfeet dangling in the air. The guard tossed her against the house, rattling her head when it struck the siding. Celene launchedherself at him again, flinging her arms around his knees, takinghim down.

The demon growled, putting a boot to herribs once he stood. Celene curled into a ball, but the kicks keptcoming. She passed out with only one thought looping through hermind.

Run, Jace. Run.

Galena dipped her fingersinto the buttered popcorn, grabbing a handful, her attention on theTV screen. She was enjoying a rare day off. Hence, the moviemarathon. “So, Ram?”

Denim answered but she fixed on Uma ThurmaninKill Bill: Volume 1. “What about him?” She stretchedtoward the coffee table for another fistful of popcorn.

“The two of you. Are there sparks?”

“That would make me pretty stupid. He’sarrogant. He’s emotionally unavailable. He’s left a trail ofhoneys.”

Galena giggled. “Those are his good points.Seriously. If you scrape away all his bullshit, he’s a good male. For a satyr. Besides, all male Firebrands play around until theymeet their mates.”

“Whoa, girl. Mate? You know my story. Thesatyr and I will maintain a professional relationship. I’ve nurseda broken jaw. I don’t need a broken heart.”

“Sure,” Galena said around a mouthful ofpopcorn, her gaze returning to the screen.

When her D-chip signaled, she groaned andtapped a wrist. “This better be good. The knife fight is coming up,and it’s classic. … Yeah. … Gotcha.” Galena glanced at hermovie-enthralled, visiting roomie and arched her brows. Since thecall was not from afreron, she spoke aloud, unable to talkmind to mind.

“What’s up? Another incident at aportal?”

“No. A strange message.” She picked up theremote, clicking off the TV. “We’ve been called to DirectorAlarik’s office now. Heavy emphasis on the ‘now’ part of theconvo.”

“Both of us?”

“Especially you, it would seem.”

“Who called?”

“The director’s personal assistant,Zora.”

“Do they need more blood from me? I alreadygave yesterday. Maybe they screwed it up. I’ll bet that’s it.”Denim unfolded the leg under her and pushed off the couch. “I’lljust check the mirror and put on some better-looking sweats. Idon’t want to scare anyone.”
