“Power?”

“Yes. So far, each of us has a … uh … gift,or power. I am a seer, of sorts. I have visions of people orevents. I’m called a scryer.”

“Impossible.”

“Not for humans, but I’m no longer fullyhuman, Denim. Neither are you. It’s hard to accept at first.”

“Trust me. I’m all human.” Denim pinched herarm as if her flesh was proof.

Skyler offered a polite smile which impliedDenim was a damn fool. “I changed. So will you. When your giftssurface, you’ll be assigned a trainer, a mage who’ll help youcontrol and develop your new talents.”

Denim nodded, despite retaining a healthydose of doubt. “Okay. Hit me with the bad.”

“You’ll be on Cerberus’s hit list. We don’tknow why he wants us, but it can’t be good. His men capturedBraelyn, Rein’s mate. I was attacked, but…” Her lilac eyes rolledtoward her mate. “…they failed to capture me. Margo and Chay werekidnapped. Thankfully, they escaped.”

“Which brings us tomaybe-good-but-probably-bad news.” Kole uncrossed his foot to leanforward. “You’ll be moving into my stronghold until we snagCerberus.”

Denim held up a hand. “Whoa right there. Ihave a place in New Orleans, Commander. I have a job at theAlliance. You can forget about the move.”

“It’s not an option.” Sparks jumped fromKole’s tented fingers.

“Sure it is. I’m not relocating.” Denimclamped her jaw tight, a message of pure stubborndetermination.

When a flame shot from one of Kole’sfingertips, she flinched.

Skyler, obviously unafraid of beingscorched, wrapped a slender-fingered, manicured hand around Kole’smuch larger one. The sparks stopped immediately. He exhaled, relaxed his bunched shoulders, and drew in his temper. His matetilted her head to the side while smiling at the huge, dangerousdemon. “Tone down the alpha male, darling. You frightenpeople.”

She twisted toward Denim. “This intimidatingdemon and I live at the stronghold, along with Margo and Chay. Reinand Braelyn recently moved in as did Nico Abello.”

“Abello? Wasn’t he an Alliance agent?” Denimremembered him from the meeting with Kole. He had aired hisproblems with Sabine while she hammered Ram.

“The same. He’ll look forward to havinganother agent at the stronghold.”

“I worked hard to get where I am. I’m notsacrificing my job. The move is a no-go.” Denim crossed her armsover her chest.

Galena rested a hand on Denim’s shoulder.“Think about it. Cerberus is a serious guy who wants his own set ofBlood Coven mages for some reason.”

“Nope. Got a life. Love it. Got theAlliance. Love it.”

Skyler glanced at Kole. She arched a regalbrow.

For a while, he held her gaze. Then heblinked, doing a double-take as if the lights just switched on inhis brain. “No. Hell no. Not another one. I’m not doing it, Frisca. One blackmailer’s enough.”

“Doing what, Commander?” asked Galena.

“Taking on another fucking Alliance agentjust because they’re too damn stubborn or stupid to stay out ofharm’s way.”

Denim eyeballed each person in the officeuntil the situation dawned on her. “Oh. Abello. That’s why he worksfor you now? Blackmail?”

“Yeah, but one dumbass is enough.” Kolesnarled despite Skyler’s pat to the back of his hand.

Denim grinned. “I bet two dumbasses would bebetter, Commander.”

Could moving to this other realm be the funMarta wanted me to have?

It sure might.
