Kilem’s eyes widened. “Rina, nice to seeyou.”
Kara snorted.
“You know me, Kilem. I’ve got nothing to dowith this. I just stopped by for a quick fuck.”
“Tough. Open your mind to me, Rina, so Idon’t have to hurt you.”
“I’m open. If you’d drop by more often, I’dopen a lot more.”
Kara propped a fist on her hip. “Really,Kilem? Have you no standards?”
“None.” His eyes captured Rina’s for a fewmoments. “She’s good to go.”
Released from Kara’s grip, she bent to pickup her clothes.
As she sauntered out, Kilem whistled. “Seeyou sometime.”
Jarek ground his heel into the berserker’schest. “Your turn.”
Kilem held Luke’s gaze.
The berserker’s body jerked as heconvulsed.
“He’s resisting my probe,” said thewarlock.
Jarek nodded, bending near Luke’s ear. “Ifhe can’t get in, you’re worthless to me. The next probe will getthe information from you, but your brains might be scrambled. Ifyou have any.”
“Wait. I may have heard something.”
“I’m waiting.” Jarek grabbed Luke’s upperarm, tugging him into a seated position.
“The last male who asked questions of theberserker never came home.”
Jarek growled. “Who?”
“Golarg.”
“I’m still waiting.”
“Rumor has it Spear is buying enough foodfor two.”
“Who’s Spear? Where does he live?” Dariusleaned toward Luke.
Kara grabbed a towel out of the bathroom andtossed it at the berserker. “Here. Clean up. You’re a mess.”
“Open your mind to Kilem.” Jarek called onhis Firebrand warlock again.
After a while in the berserker’s mind, thewarlock slumped against the dresser for support. “That’s all he’sgot.”
Jarek secured Spear’s location from Luke.Tapping his D-chip, he sent Firebrands to the suspected berserker’shut.
By the time he arrived with Darius, Kara, and Kilem, the others were inside, but the hovel was empty.
Darius gestured at a hole in the wood floor,a chain hanging on a peg, the broken window, and the blood on thejagged glass. “Looks like we’re too late. I’d say his prisonerbolted.”
Jarek walked outside to the rear of the hut.“The captive traveled this direction. Not hard to track with theblood. Let’s hope Spear ran the other way. I don’t see hisprints.”
He pointed at several Firebrands in hiscommand. “Find Spear. Don’t kill him. We may need him forquestioning. Darius, Kara, Kilem, with me.”
