Still too exhausted to sit up, she twistedto look around the room. One healer stood at the bedside. Koleslept nearby in a chair, his chin sagging on his chest. Tears beganto stream down Braelyn’s cheeks. “I thought I would lose you.”

Rein pulled her in tighter, sharing hisstrength, wiping away her tears with his thumb. It was his turnnow. His turn to keep her safe. That was how it worked. Her cold, controlling vampire was her strength, but she was also his. “Mymate’s too stubborn to let me die.”

“Right back at you. I had a really good peekinside. You’re pretty stubborn yourself.”

“I keep telling you.”

Kole rose, stretched, the tension on thedemon’s face relaxing. “Welcome back, Rein.” He rested a hand onhis warrior’s shoulder, a demonstration of love for his friend andfellow soldier. Braelyn understood it was a rare gesture betweenthe two males who prized each other but would never put theirfeelings into words.

Their unspoken affection brought on anotherround of tears from Braelyn.

“Everyone will want to see you,” saidKole.

“I’ll share him for a while.” She wiped herwet cheeks.

Several Firebrands at a time entered theroom, Denim and Ram first.

Braelyn kept a close watch on Rein duringthe visits, but when his coloring paled and his lips clenchedtogether, probably from stupidly braving the pain, she took controlof the situation. “Now, get the hell out so I can have some alonetime with my mate.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Braelyn balanced on the edgeof Rein’s desk in a short green leather skirt and four-inch heelswhich made her crossed legs look even hotter. She wished her matewould drool. If he were the drooling kind. Even hypothetically.Which he wasn’t. He was more the attack you, throw you on theground, and rip your clothes off kind. Anything not requiring muchconversation or drooling.

Against her wishes, a healed Rein reportedto the stronghold the morning after he had nearly died in themedical facility from a tranq overdose.

He stared at Brae’s bouncing leg. “You’rereacting to my near death. That’s why.”

“That’s why what?”

“Why you’re so horny and want me to fuck youon the floor.” He paused and waved his hand around the space.

“Possibly.” She gulped out her words. “Youalmost died on me.”

“But I didn’t.”

The leg bounce started again. He did seemcompletely healed from yesterday’s ordeal. “Do you think this wholemate stuff is starting to get boring?”

His blue gaze flipped up from reading areport, his brows pulled down as if puzzled. “Boring? Are youcrazy? I can’t get enough of you. Have you no memory, female? Threeorgasms in lieu of breakfast each morning. Nighttimes of specialpleasures. I confess to letting you down yesterday. I wasn’t up tothe task.”

“I’m sitting here wearing your favoriteskirt and a top which shows off my belly button. My boobs arepushed up to twice their size. My damn shapely gams are swinginglike out-of-control scissors while all you do is read shit. EitherI’m losing my touch or you’re getting bored with me.”

When Rein popped up, his chair flew into theback wall. He stalked to his mate. He palmed her knees, pushing herlegs open wide, sandwiching his hips between them while her skirtrucked higher. His hands grasped her ass as he pulled her in tight.“Feel me?”

Braelyn’s hand went to his crotch. “It’slovely. A big, hard bulge. Is it for me?”

“Only and always. Now unzip my pants, takeme out, and ride me.”

Her neck pivoted as she glanced around. “Areyou kidding me? This office is filled with windows. Everyone willsee us.”

“Brae.” His hips ground against her sweetspot in a suggestive rhythm.

She moaned, about to come with both of themfully clothed. Pausing, she flat-handed his chest, pushing himaway. “No. Later.”

Rein scrubbed a hand over his close-croppedhair. “Did you just come down here to give me a boner and run?”

“No. I came down here to tell you to getyour ass home early so we can play Vampire and Witch Do the Nastyin Every Room. It’s my favorite game.”

Rein strode to his desk, his glutes tight, his steps determined. He shoved papers into random drawers. “SinceI’m still recovering, I should leave early.”
