Slipping into an alcove offthe street, Miller drew his cell phone to his ear. “Harry. That wasfast. What did you find out?”

“First, I need to get this out there eventhough you already know. This task is overwhelming. Some of ourtrackers have lists of over a hundred names. It’s not like they cancheck on them daily. And, of course, their people are spread outall over the world.”

“I do understand, Harry, butCustodesTempliihas waited centuries for this event. Our legacy. Thetime of the prophecy has come. We can’t neglect our duty.”

“Not saying we can. Just taking myfrustration out on you.”

Miller could almost see Harry running hisfingers through his messy hair.

“Some of our guys are asking for more time. They’re all doing the best they can. They’re renting private jets, using up money like water. Hope we’ve got plenty.”

“We do, mate. It’s been accumulating forcenturies, racking up interest for such a day. You’re in charge ofthe books now.”

“Okay. Two of the trackers with the smallestnumbers hit me immediately because they already had people theywere worried about. One of Solemnia’s has gone missing. She’s asculptor who lives in Cincinnati. She’s a little flaky, our guysays, but she’s never been off the grid this long. The apartment isstill listed in her name, but one day her stuff is there and thenext day it’s gone. Anyway, her name is Margo Hunter.”

Miller sandwiched the phone between hisshoulder and ear while he searched for writing material. When hetook a small notebook from his pocket, he reached for a pen. “MargoHunter, you say. Solemnia’s line. Got it. Who else?”

“One of our gals said her person isn’tmissing. The sitch is just weird. Skyler Maxwell, the chief legalofficer for the Alliance, sold her condo in Chicago. The trackerdoesn’t know where she’s living, but she’s still with the Alliance. Here’s the catch. She never leaves her office to go home at night. After work, she vanishes but shows up again in the morning.”

“Skyler Maxwell. Whose bloodline?” He wroteher name in his notes.

“Anarai.” Harry gave Miller three morenames.

“I’ll see what this info gets me with mycontacts. I’ll be back in touch.”

He paused so long Harry said, “You there,Miller?”

“Yeah. We can’t fuck this up. We need toaccount for our people.”

“I know.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Kole thundered into theantechamber of the Temple of Justice, tugging on the neck of hispurple robe with the insignia of the fiery Phoenix on its sleeve. He was not pleased to start his day here. Cadmon nodded a stiffgreeting.

Hearing footsteps behind him, Kole shiftedhis hand onto his dagger hilt as he twisted around.

Nace entered, his eyes feral gold, his catprowling close to his skin. “High Commander. Kole. You look ascomfortable as I feel. I’d hate to fight in this get-up. Wearing itchafes my dick.”

Jarek slammed through the door. “Down, frerons. Only me. What does the Temple want?”

Cadmon shrugged. “They summon. We come. Theyare interested in these superhumans and are requesting a statusreport on our other activities.”

As high commander of the Scion Firebrandsand, thus, director of the Ministry of the Shield, the ylvereported directly to the Temple of Justice. Kole didn’t envy himthe job of juggling the demands of the warriors and navigatingpolitical intrigues.

Nace patted the side of his robe. “I feelnaked without my sword. Kole, I hear a lot of activity is going onover at your stronghold. You a hotel or what?”

He snorted. “Yeah. I’m hanging out ano-vacancy sign. A second Alliance agent named Denim Quinn followedin Abello’s footsteps. She’s now one of my Firebrands.”

“Careful, demon. Soon all your warriors willbe human,” scoffed Nace.

“The fuckers keep blackmailing me. They maybe weaker than us, but they are devious as hell.”

Kole shifted his feet apart, clasping hishands behind his back. “And those newbie witches are turning mystronghold ass side up. They’re doing what they call a retro-fit.Some shit they watch on HGTV.”

The others moaned in what was likelysympathy.

Nace turned his attention to Jarek. “So,you’ve got your own Blood Coven witch under wraps.”
