His scowl had no effect on her. Togetherthey fired at the attackers while she muttered, “Why the hell dothey want you?”

A lucky shot grazed her arm. She collapsedto the floor, unable to move, paralyzed. When a shooter who movedinto the open had a bead on Denim, Ram threw himself over her, protecting her with his body.

But he took one to the back because of hisstupid save. A different soldier fired. Ram clutched his leg.Another bullet hit his shoulder. He buckled and fell to his ass. Hewas stiller than Denim, silent.

While she was woozy from the sedative-lacedthrough-and-through, bad guys cropped up to drag Ram out theconnecting door toward shipping.

The remaining shooters held down Thorn andGalena, spraying ammo to cover the escape.

Denim was useless while herfreronswere hamstrung by a barrage of gunfire.

Though she was out of ammo, her arm floppeduselessly at her side when she tried to grab another magazine. Nogo.

Ducking heavy fire, Galena and the shifterbraved the tranq bullets to charge the shooters. Some ran. Somedropped to the ground. Dead. The Amazon took out two soldiers asThorn raced after the satyr.

Denim shook her hands, regaining a littlefeeling. She stumbled to her feet to follow the shifter, limpingafter him. Thorn was in the middle of the empty shipping room. Therear slide-up door was open, the loading dock deserted.

When Galena joined them, she and Thorn racedout and down the ramp. Denim bumble-footed after them, still in ahaze. Outside, Jezzi, Bade, and Sig faced them with weaponsdrawn.

When they spied Galena, the Firebrandsdropped their arms to the side.

“See anybody?” asked Denim, blinking herfoggy eyes.

“Nobody.” Jezzi’s sleek dark hair flippedfrom side to side.

Tires squealed.

Denim, Thorn, Galena, and Jezzi jerkedtoward the sound. Their targets raced out of an adjoining warehousein a black SUV. Ram had to be with them.

“Another exit.” Thorn threw back his headand roared, his wolf surfacing, claws popping from his fingertips.“Where the fuck did it come from?”

Sig, one of the new Firebrand recruits, raced out of the shipping room. “There’s a hidden door behind acabinet in there. It leads down some steps to a tunnel. A garage atthe end.”

Lightning shot from Denim’s hand, crackingthe concrete at her feet. A fierce wind kicked up, so strong theFirebrands struggled to stand upright. Thunder clashed. Thorhimself couldn’t have spoken louder.

Kole and Rein rushed to her side.

Containing the storm she created, Denimpointed toward the road. “They’ve got Ram.”

“Jezzi. Thorn. Shift. Follow the scent.”Kole tapped his wrist. When he disconnected, he explained he hadasked Logan to do a GPS trace on Ram’s D-chip. Fire shot from hisfingers. “Tyr. Rein. Do your shit.”

A cool breeze ruffled Denim’s hair when themales raised their arms, palms out. Swirling dirt traveled alongthe same road as their spells. They remained still for some time, eyes closed.

When the panther and wolf returned, Thorntook to two legs and shook his head. “Sorry. After a while, a carmutes the scent too much.”

Denim sensed lightning building in her toes, moving upward, and trying to exit through her hands. She controlledit. The two warlocks dropped their arms and faced her. “Sorry,”said Rein. “We lost them a few miles away. Tyr and I will portalthere. See what’s what.”

She ran a palm over her hair. “Please.”

He and Tyr touched their wrists anddisappeared. They threw their own gateway, something Denim had notlearned to do yet. Ram had told her it was used in emergenciesonly, too draining on a D-chip. This was an emergency.

Kole clenched his jaw, grinding his teethwhile his demon flickered. He tapped his wrist. “Logan says thesatyr’s chip is inactive. As if they took it out of commission. What happened in there?” Kole growled, tapping his fiery handstogether.

Rapid words fell from Galena’s mouth. “Thehumans tranqed Ram. They dragged him out through a hidden tunnelbefore we could reach him. It led to a garage. A car musta beenwaiting.”

Kole listened, his fire-gold eyes set on theroad the SUV had traveled.

“They targeted Ram.” Denim took a deepbreath to keep from choking up, still unsteady on her feet. “Theyrecognized him. I heard them talking. Some picture they’dseen.”
