After he muttered a response, his thoughtsdrifted toward the fight. “I live for the battle, Brae. Therush.”

When she caught his shoulders, he had nochoice. He looked at her. Eyes soft, she gave him a quick hug. “Iknow, but watch your soul.”

Firebrands rushed in behind them. Jarek andDax’s teams took point near the door. Kole and Nace’s squadsassembled to their rear. Recruits spread around the perimeter ofthe base.

On cue, Margo straight-armed it, holding herpalm out to disrupt communication signals. Firebrands along withhumans lost chatter. The airwaves dropped dead.

Bloodcurdling screams, thundering boots, blades or spears pounding on shields, and gunsdrawn, the warriors charged through the front entrance in a blur ofspeed, taking out the doors as if they werepapiermâché.

Kole’s team along with Nace’s warriors metresistance from Humans First mercenaries on the north side of thebase, men pouring out of what must be barracks.

The battle took place in quick-time, theEarthers’ jacked-up speed, their agility nearly matching theAeternals. Nearly, but not completely.

A uniformed human blocked Kole’s path. Thesoldier lifted his gun, but Kole shot a stream of fire. With theshooter incinerated, he slapped a hand to his side where he feltthe sting of a bullet. He pivoted to face the guy, a pale-faced kidhardly out of puberty.

Kole sent a blast of heat to the would-bekiller’s gun, the young mercenary dropping it like a hot potatowhen it scorched his hand. The commander grabbed the kid’sshoulder, letting loose 220-volts of shock and awe. Black aroundthe edges, the kid dropped to the ground, smoking. The demon had notime to consider the uselessness of the inexperienced soldier’slife choices.

He glanced at his command.

Jezzi, in her panther fur, gripped anadversary in her jaws. Nace, a jaguar, was tearing flesh from afighter’s body, feeding. Rein, having joined the team, spun in acircle with his hand out, using warlock powers to down chargingopponents.

Plop. Plop. Plop.

They fell before they could fire.

Rein hunted for more blood action. He neverstuck with the non-messy route. The mix-breed Firebrand drew backlips, his fangs popping sharp. His big set of pearly whites changedhim from coldly handsome to feral. No denying it. He strode towarda soldier, allowing a wild shot. With fingers locked in the male’shair, he bit into the guy’s neck, draining him. When Rein steppedaway, the facade of civilization was wiped from his face. Blooddripped from his mouth. His eyes glowed red.

Satisfied everyone was on task, Kolethundered toward the chopper, flinging attackers out of his path. His demon was in control, its body leaving a trail of crimsonflames. When he neared his goal, the helicopter’s blades rotated. It lifted off.

Damn.

The ground shook with the chopper’s power asit took to the air. The panther Jezzi, closest to the aircraft, shifted while she jumped for the runner, naked or not. The femalewas about the win. She held on while it gained altitude but droppedwhen it continued to rise. No holding back those engine horses.

A bullet whizzed by Kole’sear. He spun, straight-armed his Glock, and fired. Dead centerforehead. One more dirt nap. With his gun holstered, he tossed outhis hand, shooting flames at the next Humans First bastard.

Denim was with Dax’s Team Three when itraced through the front door, a wide path cleared for them byJarek’s fighters.

While the Southern Stronghold remained toclean out the sector, their squad charged out the back, across afield, and toward the labs Skyler had described.

They met resistance on the way fromsoldiers, some in uniform, some in boxers with no shirts or shoes. The humans fired wildly, surprised or roused from sleep.

In a blur, Dax barreled into two attackers. He took one to the ground, twisting the guy’s head between weightyhands. When the vampire Firebrand sped behind the other, he grabbedaround the soldier’s throat and sank fang. Blood splattered inDenim’s face while she sprinted past.

Handy skill.

Denim fired off a shot to the chest of asoldier who bullseyed her. It was hardly fair since he was halfnaked, but she didn’t care. Only Ram was on her mind. This assholestood between her and her satyr.

Thorn turned wolfy, a guy’s neck clenchedbetween his jaws. Blood matted the shifter’s fur.

Sabine and Nico disappeared into the firstlab but exited, shaking their heads.

Denim raced for the second door. Locked.

Damn.
