“Whatever you need,” he promised.“I’m here.I love you.”

She only wept.

Chapter 5

Across town, Devynwas dragged into the shadows while she slept. At the edge of the abyss where information ebbed and flowed, a deep grief sucked at her feet, a black tar that she couldn’t escape.

A small glowing light lifted, brushed her cheek, and winked out.

She surged up, gasping as if she’d been held underwater.Gulping air, blinking away the haze, another vision flitted across her mind. The detective was curled around a woman.

“Devyn?”Marlene called from her bedroom across the hall.

“I’m fine.It’s...”She didn’t have the woman’s name, only her sorrow.“Not close.”

Marlene’s silhouette appeared in the doorway.“Close enough to visit you.And wake us both.”

No point in apologizing for factors outside of her control.Devyn didn’t want to consider the ramifications of the vision. She didn’t want to feel this close to the detective or any of his problems.

“The soul will find a new path,” Marlene offered. She had to sense Devyn was holding something back.

Devyn wasn’t ready to talk about Cade Laurier or what this vision might mean.Instead, she agreed with her mentor.“There was a sweet spark of joy.”

“Good.Hold it close,” Marlene advised.“Want me to stay?Or fix tea?”

“No, thank you.”Devyn slid back down under the covers.“The connection passed.”

And when it returned, she’d do her best to be ready.Professional.For although Marlene was the prophet, Devyn knew the detective was about to take on a significant role in her life.
