“Let me guess,” Cade said.“Owned by a cremation service?Probably with a lion emblem.”

“Yes.”Hoffman frowned.“You’d better play me that recording.”

Devyn shied away from the recording of her voice as he replayed it for Hoffman. He thought about his promise to her friend Marlene.“Sending you a copy,” he said when it finished.

Hoffman stood.“That doesn’t get us the forensics expert piece of the profile.”

“Your job.”Devyn pushed to her feet, swaying a little.“I need rest.Go find Dee.”

Cade instinctively reached out and steadied her, ignoring the jolt of heat under his palm.“We can’t just barge into a business,” he said.“We need—”

She cut him off.“Dee needs you to figure it out.”The steely glare she aimed at him was much more familiar.“The killer was here.He took her there. If he learns that you’re closing in, what will he do?”

Hoffman swore.“Familyties, Laurier.Multiple victims here.He must be a Chicago cop.Former, let’s hope.If he’s still on the job, he’s heard about Charlene by now.”

“That’s been all over the local news,” Cade said.He tipped his head to Devyn.“Plus, national headlines for the cadaver dog team.If Dee is alive, we have to come up with something before he moves her.”

“We need a name,” Hoffman said, glancing at Devyn.

The psychic shook her head.“That’s all I have. The lion is important.”She looked around and staggered toward the corridor that connected the convention area to the hotel.

“Devyn, wait.”He jogged to catch up with her.“I’ll drive you.”

“Go rescue that girl.”She walked like a weary old woman.“I’m booking a room,” she added.“Call me when it’s over.”

Chapter 7

Devyn had never beenmore grateful for a hotel room. She opted for a suite and appreciated it immediately, indulging in a long hot shower.

Her muscles had cramped trying to forcibly find threads that would tie to the killer.More than once, she thought the police should have gone to Serena.Or rather Devyn should have consulted the one person she knew who could speak fluently with ghosts.

But it was over, she had done her part. And after some recovery she could move back into her regular work.Counseling and advising and not going looking for anything more challenging than someone’s lost keys.

She had food delivered from her favorite dumpling restaurant and ordered a bottle of wine to go with it from room service.

She tried to watch a light-hearted rom-com movie and fell asleep.
