“Has she accepted you?”his mother asked.“Giving your heart away shouldn’t be taken lightly, my dear. Not with our bloodline.”
Finally, I allowed my eyes to look up and noticed she was gazing at me.“I wholeheartedly accept.”Darce squeezed my hand in encouragement.“Your son is an amazing male and such a credit to you.”
“Duna, my love, it appears Darce has met his soulmate.I sense great power inside her, too.”Tamus, the Noxlin king, gave me a sweet smile.“We welcome you, Lora.”I watched in awe as Tamus cast his shadow magic into the sky, opening a massive skylight. The lanterns that were floating above us suddenly lit.Moonlight cascaded into the grand room, making all the gold splendour glisten.
The music changed tempo and Darce pulled me to the dance floor.Holding me flush against him, we started to move. Two bodies, one soul.
Nothing could break us.
Chapter Thirty four
The music played, thewine flowed, and I had never felt so welcomed. The only uneasy stare was Charna. She knew what I truly was.Darce had managed to leash her all this time by using his powers and threatening her.Remembering the pain he had inflicted on her, I shuddered.I had no doubt he’d destroy her life if she told anyone.
“What are you thinking?”Darce was watching me intently as we moved around each other to the music. My favourite piece hadn’t come on yet, and the night was becoming late.
“That my favourite piece of music hasn’t come on yet.”
“And what piece is that?”
“The Last Promise.”Darce gave me a dazzling smile before clicking his fingers towards the string quartet.Within seconds, the melody I had been waiting for began to play.
Automatically, I sunk to the ground in a bow.Darce held his hand out to me, and after taking it, I slowly rose to my feet.My moves had become instinct, I was so well practised in this dance.Darce raised his hand in the air, helping me glide around his body. The melody followed through my veins.I could hear the pain and turmoil in each movement of the violin strings.I did a few turns around him, switching directions for each turn, before the tempo slowly began to increase.Everyone had cleared the dance floor to watch us.The Noxlin prince and his chosen one.Darce radiated confidence, and in his safe arms I had no fear of being watched by everyone in this room.He would always keep me safe. With one arm cupped at the side of my waist, we began to glide across the dance floor. My body moved to the rhythm of the violin. We took another turn before standing in front of each other. This time, our hands were almost palm to palm, but not touching, as we swayed back and forth. The current charging between us made wisps of dark and light swirl in the small space between our fingertips just like before.
Happiness.I had never felt pure joy like this.Welcoming it, I let it consume me.Darce was all I ever wanted. After this ball, I would agree to run away with him until we worked out a plan or I came into my powers.I was done being separated from him.We would be apart no longer.
Darce lifted me up into the air with pure contentment. My laughter filled the room, and everything happened in slow motion.
The smile on Darce’s face disappeared and was replaced with pure fear.My arms were glowing. With a glance down my body, I realised every inch of me was alight with power.Dylin power.
It was too late for Darce to surround me with darkness.Everyone in this room could see what I was.The enemy.
General Nox was the first who tried to strike, but Darce moved me behind his back.“Don’t you fucking touch her!”Darce roared.Nisha and Lisha were immediately at our side and began chanting, opening some kind of portal.
“Prince. She isDylin!”the general gasped, taking a step back.Understanding hit his face.“Youknew! All this time, you’ve been hiding her.Showing her our secrets.Darce, you’ve fuckingdoomedus all!”
“Let me get her to safety and then I will come back and explain everything,” Darce pleaded, backing me towards the portal that the fire twins had opened.
