“That you had a girlfriend. And I might’ve implied there was something going on between you and Megan. I assume you were able to clear all that up.”

“That’s not all you said.”

Tim’s voice cut in again. “Make it quick. They need him next door.”

Philip and Gannon wanted him back in the studio? From Tim’s tone, it sounded like they weren’t doing well without him, so he must not’ve been the whole problem after all.

“I don’t know what I said.” Kate’s voice came through the line like one long sigh of annoyance. “I probably complimented her dress. Did you see her arms? She’s ripped. Ever arm wrestle her?”

He had seen Erin’s arms. Beautifully lean and toned in accordance with her job, not ripped. “Did you say something about that?”

“I might’ve. Why? Is she that sensitive? Don’t buff girls think being strong is good? Healthy?”

Fair enough. None of this should’ve initiated such a problem for him and Erin.

“What else?” The door latched behind him, but he didn’t turn to see if Tim had left alone, or if everyone had stepped out to give him privacy.

“Come on, John. I just got back from my honeymoon.”

“What else did you say?”

“That you had added a plus one a couple of weeks ago, so I was surprised to see you replaced her with Erin. That’s it. No worse than what you said about Tanner.”

“No part of what I said was a lie.” He turned and found the small office deserted. “And you and Tanner didn’t split over it.”

“What does that tell you?”

That he and Erin most definitely didn’t have what it would take to build a future together, since they’d been brought down so easily.

“When you had your accident, I drove up there to see you. It’s not fair to say we’re not friends.”

A friend wouldn’t have sabotaged his relationship with Erin. A friend wouldn’t have kicked him out of the wedding party. “If you’re worried about your vacation, don’t be.”

“It’s not that. I—”

“It’salwaysthat.”

“Forget it. I’m sorry I called.” She disconnected.

John muffled a shout of frustration and shoved the phone back into his pocket.

A minute later, the door opened again. Lina and the cameraman reentered.

The social media manager perched in her chair. “Want to talk about it?”

“No.”

“Okay. Continue, then?”

He nodded and took a seat.

She mimed taking a deep breath.

He felt no better after obeying, but he must’ve looked more like himself because she nodded to her sidekick.

The cameraman hit a button and signaled her to pose the next question.

“What does the song ‘Wreckage’ mean to you?”
