“You look like you’re the type that likes purple.”
“What about you?” I asked, betting he had an ugly color as a favorite.
“Black.”
“Eww.”
He threw his head back and laughed. “Nah, don’t say eww. Black is beautiful. You’re beautiful.”
My cheeks burned at Melijah’s words. It wasn’t expected, but I appreciate it. “Thank you, but why are you telling me this?”
He had his hand on the handle of the door as he gazed down at me.
“Because it’s true.” He winked and jerked open the door for us to walk in.
I walked in, trying not to let Melijah’s words get to me. It wasn’t needed since I didn’t want to go there with him. He wasn’t even my type. When we had sex, it was some of the bestsex I had ever had, but that was nothing to build something off of. It was something I didn’t want to build on. There was no way I’d go there with him, although he was fine as hell and carried himself well.
While he went to find us a seat, I went to the front desk to give the lady my name. She remembered me from when I came and got the pregnancy test done, and I told her the reason I was there.
“Okay. Please sign your name and wait to be called in the back.”
I nodded and bent over to sign my name on the paper that was attached to a clipboard. I turned back around and spied Melijah sitting away from everyone. He had his arms folded as he leaned his head back against the wall.
I took a seat next to him and pulled out my phone to open the Kindle app. It didn’t take me long to finish a book, and I was working my way throughThe Westmorelandseries by Brenda Jackson.
“Damn, I need a jar of pickles right now. I feel terrible,” he mumbled.
I lowered my phone and stared at him. “Is your stomach bothering you?”
He only bobbed his head, and I felt bad. But at least we were going through it together.
“Man, when does this shit end?” he groaned again.
I wanted to reach out and touch him, but I didn’t. Before I could answer him, my name was called. I hopped up and turned to him.
“Aren’t you coming with me?”
Melijah nodded and stood up. “Yeah, I am.”
In silence, we walked in the back with Melijah holding the door open for us.
“We’re going to put you in a room. With this being your first appointment, I’m going to need you to strip down your bottom half.”
“Oh hell,” Melijah mumbled.
I cut my eyes at him but said nothing. The nurse walked ahead of us and went to the last room on the right. We stepped in together, and she closed the door.
She asked me a few questions about how I felt. Melijah jumped into the conversation, too.
“What about me? Why am I feeling sick too? Is that possible?”
The nurse turned to him and smiled tightly.
“It’s possible, but it’s rare. Most fathers just sleep all day.”
Melijah grunted. “I’m sleeping a lot too, but I’m also dizzy, nauseous, and can’t keep anything down.”
“Yikes. It seems like you’re pregnant too.” She giggled.
