“Wassup? Have you had lunch yet?” he asked.
“No. I’m about to eat two pickle spears. Why? What’s up?”
He snorted. “Nah, let’s go get something to eat. Can you get away for lunch?”
I wanted to get away for a while. Perhaps my mood would improve since it had been down after losing that client.
I arched a brow. “Where are you trying to go?”
“The Subs Inn.”
My stomach growled, reminding me I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. Melijah had called right on time. I wouldn’t tell him that I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. He would be ready to argue, and I didn’t want to hear him fuss.
“Okay, I can meet you there. When are you trying to go?”
“Now. I’m hungry. I’m sure you are too.”
Melijah had no idea, but he was right. I stared down at the pickles on my desk and was ready to put them back in the jar for another day.
“Yeah, I am.” I stood up with the phone to my ear. “I’ll meet you at the restaurant.”
“Word.”
Once the call ended, I put the pickle spears back and retrieved my purse from my desk drawer. With long strides, I made it to my office door and jerked it open. I nearly collided with Jada. She had a confused look on her face as she eyed me and my purse.
“And where are you going?”
I smiled tightly. “I have a lunch date with my baby daddy. Bye.”
After giving her the peace sign, I headed toward the exit. I wouldn’t give her a chance to display her disapproval. She and Camila had a problem screwing up their faces when I brought up Melijah. I wouldn’t go for that any longer. Although he wasn’t my man, he was a close friend of mine.
I made it to my car just as thunder roared from above. That wasn’t good when I’d be out of the office for an hour. Hopefully, it wouldn’t rain or wait until I got back. I opened the door and got in, starting my car. I didn’t want to keep Melijah waiting long. He had a tendency to be impatient, and I didn’t want to deal with that.
On the way to The Subs Inn, I blasted the new K-pop soundtrack. I watched the movie last night and fell in love with all the songs. Melijah was on the phone with me when I watched the movie, but he ended up falling asleep.
Traffic wasn’t too bad, and people acted as if they knew how to drive today. I didn’t have to fuss on the way to the restaurant. That was a blessing. Once I pulled into the parking lot, Melijah was there waiting for me. I parked beside his Honda and turned off my truck. Just as I gathered my purse and was about to exit, he was there to open the door for me. The smile on his small, heart-shaped lips made his handsome, brown skin brighten. I guess he was as happy to see me as I was to see him.
Melijah leaned down and pecked my lips. I would never get tired of feeling his lips against mine.
“Wassup? I hope you’re ready to eat.”
He held out his hand for me to take. I placed my hand in his and stepped out of the car.
“Yes, I’m starving. Hopefully, I’d be able to keep it down.”
We walked side by side. In the distance, thunder roared again, nearly making me jump into his arms.
He chuckled. “Scary ass.”
I smacked my lips together. “Whatever. It was loud.”
He only shook his head at me and held the door open for me to enter The Subs Inn. I shivered from the coolness that enveloped me when I stepped inside. The aroma in the restaurant was fresh, with a scent of lettuce and vinegar. It made my mouth water and stomach growl. I didn’t even have to look up at Melijah to know he was staring down at me.
“Man, let’s feed your hungry ass.”
I only smiled since I was hungry. We went to the counter to place our order. Melijah ordered a roast beef sub, and I got a turkey and bacon sub. We had to wait for our ticket number to be called since we were at a restaurant that didn’t bring our food to us. We found a table to sit at while we waited for our subs.
“What kind of drink do you want?” Melijah asked, grabbing our cups from the table.
