We went back to eating in silence. After we were done, he paid, and we left. I laid my head on the headrest of the car, not knowing how I’d get through the rest of the day. The only thing I wanted to do was get back in bed and sleep this food off. Melijah always stuffed me with food when he knew I had to go to work. If I’d told him about it, he’d have asked why I was complaining, knowing I wasn’t.

We arrived at our appointment five minutes early, and I was glad for that. Hopefully, we’d be in and out. Once we were out of the car, Melijah draped his arm around my shoulder and held me close. He dropped a kiss on my cheek.

“You smell good and look good. It’s a good thing that no men work with you.”

I only smiled. “We have the security.”

He snorted. “Ain’t nobody worried about them. I said what I said.” He held the door open for me, and I walked in first. “That ass is getting plumper too.”

My cheeks burned at his words. I already knew they were tinted a dark red color. I kept walking to the front desk to get signed in.

While I did that, Melijah went to find us a seat. After I signed my name, I took a seat next to him. He reached out and caressed my thigh as we waited. We had come a long way from where we had started. I didn’t bother with pulling out my cell phone since I knew they’d be calling us back soon. They were always on point with getting their patients in and out, which was why I was glad I came here.

“Elianna Marshall.”

Melijah and I hopped up at the same time. I was only getting an ultrasound done and was glad for that. Even though both of us wanted a boy, if we had a girl, I’d be just as happy.

We walked in silence to the ultrasound room, where the ultrasound technician was waiting for us. She had a bright smile on her face as she greeted us.

“Okay, mom and dad. Are you ready to find out what you’re having?”

We nodded, and I sat down and lifted my shirt. Melijah stood close to me. I watched the screen as my heart throbbed wildly in my chest.

“What are you guys hoping for?” she asked with a smile.

“A boy,” we answered in unison.

She inclined her head. “Let’s see if you have that little boy baking.”

She retrieved the gel from the machine and applied some to my stomach before she reached for her probe and touched it to my stomach. The image of my baby appeared on the screen. I gasped at how much bigger he or she had gotten.

“Do you see him?” I tapped Melijah’s arm.

He nodded, leaning down. “I see him, baby.”

We called our baby him when we didn’t know what we had yet. Melijah called me his baby, always speaking to me with affection, which I loved.

The technician pointed out our baby’s body parts to us. When she got the area of his or her head, I gasped.

“Wait. That’s his head?” I asked, pointing to the big ball.

The technician nodded in confirmation.

“Nah, ain’t no way in hell is my baby’s head that damn big,” Melijah retorted.

I swatted at him, but he moved away. Although it was funny, he didn’t lie, but he could have said it in a nicer way.

The technician laughed. “Are you ready to find out the gender?”

“Yes,” we stated at the same time.

She continued to move the probe on my stomach and laughed every so often.

“The baby is doing a lot of moving around.” She did a few clicks on her machine, pointed to something else on the screen, and giggled. “Oh, he’s not shy at all. Do you see it?”

My eyes widened. “Wait... Is that what I think it is?”

She laughed. “Yes, you’re having a baby boy!” she excitedly confirmed.
