The door jerked open, and heels clicked against the floor followed by a flowery scent. Jada and I stared at Camila as she glared at us with her arms folded across her chest.
“Jada, what the hell is your ass doing here? You’re supposed to be at the courthouse! I stopped by to see Eli on my way to lunch, and your ass is here too.” Camila pouted with her lips poked out.
Jada and I exchanged glances before bursting out laughing. Camila didn’t laugh with us. Her frown only deepened, which caused me to press my lips together to muffle my giggles that still wanted to spill out of my mouth. Camila took a seat at the kitchen table with us. She moved her knotless braids out of her face.
“What’s going on? You missed work yesterday and are off today. Did you find out what’s wrong with you?”
I gave a short nod. “Yes. I’m pregnant.”
It was not something I was happy about, but I knew I had to get used to the idea of carrying a life inside my body.
She gawked at me with her mouth dropped. “You don’t seem happy about it,” Camila pointed out.
I screwed up my face. “Girl, why would I be happy about having a baby after having a one-night stand?”
There was nothing pretty about that. It was only supposed to be a memory, yet now what I did had caught up to me.
Camila shrugged. “You did do the deed, so you must’ve known what would have come out of it. You didn’t think about protection?”
Camila got on my nerves and was acting like my sisters with all of her questions.
“Of course, I thought of protection. Something must’ve gone wrong because I made sure he had one. I might have been drunk, but I wasn’t stupid enough not to make sure I was protected.”
“Oh, damn. Look at it this way. It means the baby was supposed to be here.”
I buried my face in my hands and groaned. That wasn’t the way I wanted to look at it. I ran my hand down my face and huffed, staring at Camila. “I haven’t told my parents.”
“Shit!” she hissed, whistling. “Good luck with that. I can hear them now. They’re about to get into your ass.”
I tilted my head to the side and stared at her. “You don’t think I know that?”
She pressed her lips together and dropped her head. “Yeah, they’re about to disown you.”
I scowled at her as Jada laughed as if something was funny. I couldn’t stand my friends sometimes, and this was one of those moments. At least Jada tried to be positive. It was that damn Camila who made me feel worse than what I already felt.
“Hmm. Thanks a lot. If they do disown me, you’d better be prepared to claim me.”
She chuckled, dropping her head. “Oh, girl, I already have a claim on you. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. But on the real, you need to tell your parents.”
“Yeah, I know. I’m planning to go over there later today to drop the bomb on them.”
“What about the baby daddy?” she questioned.
Camila was full of questions today, and I didn’t know if I enjoyed being interrogated. I already knew that once I arrived at my parents’ house, more questions would be thrown at me. Maybe I should prepare myself now.
I didn’t know what I’d do about Melijah yet. Since I hadn’t answered any of the texts, he hadn’t reached back out. I didn’t know how I felt about that. Was he giving up already?
“I don’t know what I’ll do about him.” I then gave her details about what happened yesterday at Skylar’s. “He reached out, but I hadn’t reached back out to him.” Every time I thought of the way I blew him off, I felt bad about it.
“You’re the most difficult person I’ve ever known in my life,” she mumbled.
I dropped my head to my chest because I knew I was. It was something I tried to work on, but it was challenging to do.
“Yeah, whatever. Thank you, ladies, for stopping by to see me. It’s always a pleasure talking to both of you and getting advice?—”
“That you’re not going to take,” Jada finished what I wasn’t about to say.
I scowled at her. “Whatever. Y’all need to get back to work. I’ll be okay.”
