I lifted my head to stare at him. “No, but I don’t think I can eat it. It’s already turning my stomach.”
He shook his head. “Then what will you eat?” He sounded concerned, and I didn’t want him to be.
I shook my head as tears filled my eyes. “I’m not sure. Nothing works for me.”
He sat back in his seat and folded his arms across his chest. “Do you want to try to eat the food?”
“Nope. If I take a bite, I’ll throw up, and that’s a chance I’m not going to take.”
We sat in silence, and I pushed the plate away from me. Melijah pushed his plate away, too. I frowned, looking at him, wondering why he had done that.
“Okay, I get it. Just looking at it makes me sick,” he stated.
We shared a laugh.
“Oh, that reminds me. I have an appointment next week. Would you like to go?” I hoped like hell he agreed to go with me. This was something I didn’t want to do alone.
Melijah seemed surprised I had asked him that. “Hell yeah. What time?”
I told him the date and time. He nodded, pulling out his cell phone. “Word. I’ll be there. Are you ready to head out?”
I glanced at the food and back at him. “You think I should take this to go? I feel bad for wasting it.”
“Don’t even worry about it. Just leave it on the table. Let’s get out of here.” He stood up and held out his hand for me to take.
I didn’t hesitate to put my hand in his. The touch of Melijah’s hand sent a spark that went straight between my legs. He gazed down at me, and I almost squirmed. He pulled me up and continued to look down at me. Gosh, it was the look he always gave me. It made me feel beautiful. It made me feel like he wanted to eat me alive.
I almost didn’t want to leave him, as I had enjoyed my time with him. I hope he shows up for the appointment next weekso that I can see him again. We ambled out of the café holding hands. He walked me to my truck in silence until I broke it.
“Gosh, it’s so hot out here,” I groaned.
“Unlock your door. Make sure you get to wherever you’re going safely. I would tell you to let me know, but you won’t.”
“Ha! You’re so funny. I’ll let you know.” I took my keys out of my purse and turned my car on from the outside.
Melijah opened the truck door for me, and I got in and stared at him. I stared at his lips, knowing that was a dangerous thing to do. I snapped out of it and looked back at his face. He had a slight smile on his face.
“Be safe,” was all he said, closing the door behind him.
Melijah stared at me through the window and gave a salute before he strolled away. I watched as he walked to his Honda Civic and got in. I waited until he was gone before I pulled out behind him. He went one way, and I went the other. It felt like Melijah took a part of me with him, and I didn’t know how to feel about that.
When I pulledup at the medical center a week later, Melijah was already there waiting for me. I told him I’d be late since I couldn’t figure out what to wear. He acted like it was no big deal when I thought it was. Since we met up at the café last week, we’d been talking more. I tried to prove to him that I wouldn’t be a stranger, and I made sure I reached out to him. He was shocked that I did. We hadn’t seen each other since the café, but we had been calling and texting each other. Both of us were still experiencing morning sickness. I couldn’t even laugh at him since I felt like I had it worse than him.
I parked my car and turned it off. When I turned my head, Melijah was already at the door, getting ready to open it. I unlocked it for him. He gave me a smile that had me wanting tolean over and kiss his heart-shaped lips. Gosh, I had it bad. That was why we were in this situation now.
“Wassup? Good morning.” He held out his hand for me to take, which I accepted, and he helped me out of the car. “You look good as hell. Yellow looks good against your light, bright skin.” His eyes roamed down my body, causing me to quiver. “Are you ready?”
I only bobbed my head. “Thanks. I love wearing yellow, but it’s not my favorite color.”
He looked down at me with his eyebrow lifted. “Hmm. What’s your favorite color then?”
I smiled brightly. “Purple.”
He grunted, causing me to screw my face. “Of course, it is.”
“What do you mean by that?”
We walked side by side to the building with him still holding my hand. I wondered if he knew he was. Did it come naturally to him?
