I lifted an eyebrow as she smiled. “That’s the sound of your baby’s heartbeat. Do you hear it? It’s strong.”

I gasped as tears filled my eyes. From the sound I heard, it was music to my ears. For the first time, I was in love, and this made me want my baby even more now. The way he or she was made had nothing to do with it. They were meant to be here.

“And you said the baby’s heartbeat is strong?” Melijah asked, stepping closer to the bed.

The technician nodded. “It is. He or she is still growing. And from the looks of it, mom, you’re six and a half weeks pregnant.”

“Is there a way I can keep up with the baby’s development every week of my pregnancy?” I inquired.

She gave me a list of apps I could try out, and I stored it in my brain for memory. As soon as I got in my car, I would look them up. When she removed the probe from my stomach, I felt a sense of sadness. I wanted to continue listening to the sound of my baby’s heartbeat.

“That’s it for the day. Your nurse will be waiting for you up front. You’ll schedule your next appointment up there as well.”

I nodded and waited for her to clean my stomach of the gel. After she did, I pulled my shirt down, and Melijah helped me up yet again.

By the time we left the medical center, I was tired and hungry. It had me wondering if I’d be able to keep anything down if I were to eat something. Yes, they prescribed me the pills, but they weren’t ready yet.

“Are you hungry?” Melijah asked when we reached my car.

“I am, but I don’t want to chance it,” I stated truthfully.

“How about I send you some money in case you change your mind?” he suggested.

I nodded with a smile. “Okay, that’s fine. Thanks.”

Melijah sighed in relief, holding his chest. “Finally, you’re getting the hang of not refusing me. That’s progress.”

I glowered at him, only for him to laugh at me. “I need to get back to work.”

“Yeah, me too. Take care. Look out for that Apple Pay and make sure you use it.”

I rolled my eyes skyward. “Yeah, yeah.”

He smirked with a shake of his head. “Go ahead and get in.”

I followed instructions and started the truck, watching as Melijah made his way to his vehicle and got in as well. Before I left the parking lot, I looked up some of the apps the ultrasound technician had mentioned. I settled onWhat to Expect. Once I arrived at work, I would set up everything.

With a smile on my face, I drove out of the parking lot of the medical center. I felt good knowing my baby had a strong heartbeat.

My phone dinged as soon as I pulled up at a stoplight. I picked it up from the cup holder and eyed the notification. Melijah sent me fifty dollars, telling me to buy some snacks too. I beamed happily. He was so sweet and thoughtful. I’d make sure I buy lots of popcorn and Dr. Pepper to drink.

Me:

Thanks.

He had texted back fast.

Melijah:

Nah, don’t mention it. Have a good day at work, Light Bright.

I’d make sure I did. I drove the rest of the way to work with a smile on my face.

Since getting those nausea pills,I’d be testing to see if I could eat without vomiting. It was a risky chance, but something had to give. I woke up extra late this morning and was glad it was the weekend. I never had any plans. It had been a while since I’d seen my friends, so I scheduled a girls’ day out. We were long overdue for an outing together.

I stood in my kitchen with my arms folded across my chest. Sometimes, I wished I knew how to cook. Today was one of the days I wished for the ability. Since I didn’t feel nauseous, I felt like I could eat everything under the sun. However, I settled for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of cold milk. Hopefully, I’d be able to keep that down.

As I moved around my kitchen, my thoughts wandered to Melijah. What did he do on the weekends if he didn’t have to work? Did he hang with his friends or was he a loner and chilled at home? I didn’t want to spend the day alone. Would he like to chill with me?
