“Thanks for tonight, Lijah.”
He sent me a wink. “Don’t mention it, Light Bright. Anything for you.”
He reached out his hand, and I put my hand in his. He lifted it to his mouth and kissed it. I beamed at him and settled backin my seat. Since it was crowded, I didn’t want to move until the crowd thinned. Melijah and I waited while holding hands.
My parents hadto be out of their damn minds. They wanted to meet Melijah, which was a bad idea to me. I was on pins and needles after my mother called and told me the news. Melijah hadn’t gotten home from work yet, so I didn’t know how this would go. They had waited to swing this on me on my first day back to work. That was great... awesome, really. I had to call Melijah and let him know. I wondered how he’d take the news.
I reached for my cell phone, clicked on his name, and then tapped the screen.
“Damn, we just left each other. Who the hell do I have to tell off for fucking with you?”
I laughed. “Nobody. I got a call from my parents?—”
“Do I have to fuck your pops up for upsetting you this morning?”
I dropped my head with a laugh. “Can I talk, please?”
“Man, go ahead.”
I relayed to Melijah what my parents said, which had him quiet for a while.
“Melijah?” I called his name.
“I have no problem meeting your family, Eli, but just know I won’t let them bully me. If they get smart with me, trust me when I say I’m going to match their energy.”
My smile was so big I thought it touched my ears with the corners of my mouth.
“Okay. Great. I’ll let them know we’ll meet with them.”
“Word. I’ll cook. What’s their favorite dish?”
“Pasta. Make your lasagna with corn and garlic bread. They’ll sure like that.” I damn sure loved it and could eat it every day.
“I can do that. Should I leave work now?”
“You don’t have to. We can go grocery shopping when I get off.”
“Okay. I’ll see you later.”
“See you.”
“Love you.”
I smiled as if he could see me. “I love you too.”
“We’ll talk later.”
“Okay. See you later.” With that, I hung up the phone.
Since I didn’t have to go to court, I decided to chill in my office. Camila and Jada stayed far away from me, and that was a good thing.
At three thirty, I got out of there, and I rushed out to meet Melijah at the grocery store.
Whenever Melijah was in the kitchen cooking, he enjoyed it when I was there too, but only because he said I needed to learn how to cook. I found it hard to do, but he always said it was easy. Of the many times he’d cooked for us, I was his assistant, messing everything up and blaming him for it. He didn’t like that too much. However, whenever he needed my help, I was down to do so.
Right now, he had me putting the noodles in the pot while he cooked the ground beef. He was also making his spaghetti sauce from scratch.
“While the noodles boil and the meat cooks down, let me rub on you,” he stated once we were done with our tasks.
