Melijah wasn’t lying when he said that. MJ had kept us up most of the night, so we took turns taking naps to care for him. As new parents, it had been challenging to adjust, but we’re managing to get through it. Our families visited us, and Melijah’s friends came to see the baby as well. Love surrounded my baby, and I love that.

When we pulled up to the house, I had to squint my eyes. Something was hanging on the porch.

“What the hell is that?” I asked Melijah, turning to look at him.

He smiled and shrugged. “I guess you have to get out of the car and see.”

While he parked the car, my eyes never left the banner that hung. My eyes widened as I read it to myself.

“Will you marry me?” I gasped and turned to Melijah, who had a massive smile on his face.

“I guess you can read after all,” he joked.

“Wait, Melijah. Are you for real?”

He nodded. “I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life. I gotta do this the proper way. Let’s get our baby in the house first.”

I blinked through the tears that were in my eyes.

“Okay.” I was choked up but had to keep it together.

After we got in the house and situated MJ in his bassinet in the living room, Melijah and I took a seat on the couch. He pulled a black box out of his pocket and got down on one knee in front of me. A sob escaped my mouth.

“Melijah! This is so wild!” I cried.

He laughed. “Nah. It’s the beginning of our life together. I never would have thought I’d be here with you like this. That one-night stand we had turned into forever. Well, I’m trying to make it forever. I love you more than words can describe. It didn’t take long for me to know how I felt about you. You mean more to me than anyone in this world, except for our son. When I told you I didn’t care where we stayed because my home waswith you, I meant that. You don’t have to ever worry about anything because I’ve got it… and always will have it for you. Elianna Marshall, will you marry me?

“Yes, Melijah Hall! Yes! I’ll marry you!” I shouted but then covered my mouth. I didn’t want to wake up the baby.

Melijah stood up and placed the ring on my finger, pulling me off the chair and into his arms. He lowered his lips to mine and gave me a kiss that made me dizzy. I never thought this would happen to me. This man, who kissed me as if his life depended on it, had changed my life in a major way, and I was forever grateful for him.

Three MonthsLater

I was at peace and happy with my new family. It took me a while to reach this point in my life, but with Melijah by my side, all things were possible. I no longer worked at the law firm and was now a stay-at-home mom. As soon as my six weeks were up, Melijah and I went at it like rabbits. I got on birth control too. It was one of the best decisions I’d ever made. I got the Nexplanon. Once those three years were up, I’d try for another baby. Until then, I planned to enjoy my time with MJ. He had grown so much in three months. Our parents had him more than we did. While he was with them, Melijah and I caught up on a lot of sleep.

We were also planning our wedding, but we weren’t in a rush to get married. Our guest list was small too. If we had it our way, we’d elope. There were so many times I wanted to suggest to Melijah to do that, but I didn’t. I knew he’d be down for it if I ever brought up the idea.

“Aye, baby!” I heard Melijah call out from the stairs. I was in the living room folding MJ’s clothes.

“Yeah. I’m down here,” I called back.

“Man, we were invited to another one of Skylar’s parties.” He came and took a seat on the floor next to me.

He looked at me, and I looked at him. We burst out laughing.

“Hell nah,” we voiced in unison.

“The last time we were invited to her party, I ended up pregnant. I’m good off of it. It’s best I stay home and chill with you. Are you down for that?”

He nodded. “Of course, I am. Any time with you is a great time. I love it here.”

I beamed. “Good. Same here. As soon as I’m finished with these clothes, I’m taking a nap. I’m tired as hell.”

“Who you telling? It’s a good thing your parents have MJ for the weekend. We can sleep all we want.”

I chuckled, agreeing with him. It was times like this that I enjoyed the most with the love of my life. If I hadn’t had that one-night stand with Melijah, there was no telling how my life would have ended up. Because of him, it changed in a significant way. I let go of friendships that were no good for me, and I was able to see that I didn’t have to do it all on my own. Melijah came in and saved me from myself.

“This has been a crazy year, huh?” he stated.
