Much as Abby and Gilly annoyed the hell out of me with their weirdness, it was nice to see him. I hadn’t seen Gilly in weeks, but I swore The Centaurs’ quarterback looked more handsome every time I saw him. And taller too.

“Girls,” Gilly said, acknowledging both of us.

Abby literally brightened like someone had switched the lights on, and she practically flew into his arms. I’d never seen anything like it. It didn’t matter if she saw this guy ten times a day; she would always greet her best friend the same. I’d been the witness of it for as long as I’d had a memory.

“Gilly, what are you doing here? You said you were out with the guys,” Abby bubbled.

“You sent me a message with a blank-faced emoji,” he answered.

“So, you came here?” she gasped.

“Of course, I did. You only send me those weird signals when something’s wrong with you.” He chuckled.

What a sweet thing to do. Although, he was always doing things like that for her.

Back when she was eighteen Abby had a near brush with death. It was a horrible time that had us all on edge because we didn’t know what was going to happen to her. The problem started out with her needing her appendix removed but then she got very sick after the surgery. Gilly had flown all the way back from a family holiday in Italy to be with her.

After that incident it didn’t take much for the man to rush to her side. Once he even flew back from somewhere just because Abby had cramps.Crampsas in the standard cramps everyone woman got, but he had to come home to make sure it wasn’t serious. That shocked me, but then he shocked me even more when he’d flown back from football camp when he just got accepted with The Centaurs because Abby had a bad cold.

A cold…not even the flu.

“You shouldn’t have done that. You should have guy time.” Abby shook her head at him.

“Whatever. I came over and walked straight in off the streets. I could have been an ax murderer.” He looked at me when he said that.

It was him I got that whole ax murderer thing from. “Why are you looking at me?” I asked with a frown.

“Taylor, you’re always leaving the front door open. Your car’s open too. It’s eight o’clock in the night, prime time for hoodlums, burglars, and creepers.”

I groaned inwardly. I didn’t think he’d understand if I said I’d mindlessly come into the house because I was thinking about Dylan.

“Well, thank God you came by. Who knows what could have happened to us?” I shot back.

He rolled his eyes at me and returned his focus to Abby. “Blank-faced emoji after you tell me about Porsha and Bella? What’s up with that?”

She pouted. “I don’t know.”

“Come, let’s get some ice cream. You can tell me what’s wrong with you over a double chocolate candy surprise.” He took her hand and led her away. “Taylor, make sure the house is locked properly,” he called over his shoulder.

Abby giggled, and the two left.

I kept watching them, wondering how they were the way they were, and couldn’t see what I saw every time I saw them. Abby talked about not being able to fall for someone, and she said she could see in me the feelings I had for Dylan. I wondered what she would say to me when I pointed out she had the same for her so-calledbest friend.

I looked away from the path they’d left and stared out to the scenery before me. The trees swayed in the gentle breeze in tandem with the slight ripple of the water in the pool. Dylan filtered into my mind and stayed there.

Stayed there, like how I wished he would stay in my life.

Chapter 14

Taylor

* * *

Saturday came again.

Dylan and I had, had the house to ourselves since last night.

This time, it was all planned because I knew my sisters would be away all weekend.
