That something was up with that guy from the convenience store.

Something sinister enough for Logan to intervene when he saw me talking to the guy, offer to give me a ride back to the motel, then sleep in his truck to… watch the place.

That’s what it looks like to me.It can’t be anything other than that right?

I’ve just grown used to people treating me badly. The man I was supposed to be with, who called himself my husband treated me so badly. So this act of kindness from someone I least expected it from has my head spinning.

Careful not to startle him I knock softly on the window and he lifts his head.At first he looks ahead of him then at me.

Realization dawns on his handsome face that now holds the shadow of a beard, giving his angular face a rugged look.

His window slides down, and he straightens up.

“Are you seriously going to tell me something wasn’t up with that guy?” I raise my brows and he presses his lips into a hard line.“You stayed out here all night?”

“I must have lost track of the time.”

“You were tracking the time?” I chuckle and he gives me a funny look. His gaze drops to my lips then flicks back up to meet my eyes.

“No.”

“So it was the guy. I’m not stupid Logan.” I’m far from it and since I know Logan works with the police it’s not hard to put two and two together.“What did he do?”

He sighs at clearly being caught out.“I’m not at liberty to discuss that.”

“And that tells me I’m right.” I thought he might say that. And now I am freaked. Round these parts used to be so safe.Ten years anywhere can make a dramatic difference.

“Thank you for staying out here,” I say.

“I was working.” He quickly says, but his eyes give him away. His eyes always gave him away to the point where sometimes I didn’t have to speak to him to know what he was thinking or guess what was true or not.It seems like some things never change.

“Of course.” I humor him.

“Where are you heading to?”

I glance at my watch and show him the time. It’s twenty to ten. “I’m supposed to be meeting you in twenty minutes.I was about to call a taxi.”

“Get in, you’re meeting just got moved up.”

“Thanks.”

I hop back in the passenger seat and we pull out onto the road.

Out the corner of my eye, I catch him looking at me so I turn to regard him too.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Is that your answer for everything?Nothing?”

He chuckles and I study his face.Apart from last night when I asked him not to be an asshole dick, this is the first time I’ve seen him smile and it’s a good look.

“No, I have more answers than that.”

“So use them. You were thinking something just now. What was it?”

He looks away from me.
