“You bet your ass I did. I bust in that motel, guns blazing. The asshole pissed himself when he saw me.”
“Good for you, badass.”
“Catch you later.”
“See you.”
We hang up and there’s a little tap on my door. It’s late and Ivy has long gone.I’m open until eight, but people don’t tend to come in past six or even seven.
This might be the odd occasion, or maybe it’s Quinn.
“Come in,” I call out.
My nerves spike but then my calm returns when the door pushes open and I see my late night visitor is Bree.
She looks as nervous to come in and talk to me as she did back in high school. It’s strange, we’ve always been friends with Quinn and we’ve hung out with her, but we’re not exactly friends.
She also dated Bryce, and I wish she hadn’t because he’s a womanizing asshole.
“Bree Dawson, now this is a classic moment.I never thought I’d see the day when you came here to see me.”
“Hi, Logan.” She dips her blonde head and gives me a smile.“I know it’s probably the weirdest thing to happen to you.”
“Nope, it’s not, so that’s good."
“I’m sorry, I guess I’ve pretty much avoided you since the eighth grade. The tenth grade for you.”
I laugh. “And why is that? I’m such a sweetheart.”
“A sweetheart devil who throws dead frogs at unsuspecting teenage girls.”
I laugh harder, remembering the incident she’s referring to very well.I got put in detention for an entire month for that.
“I swear I don’t throw things like that anymore.”
“You better not."
“So Bree Dawson, to what do I owe the pleasure of your visit tonight?I hope you aren’t here for my usual services, such as but not limited to investigating cheating spouses, murdering bastards, and other unsavory characters.”
She chuckles lightly. “No. This is a social call.”
“Well, damn now I’m even more intrigued to find out why you’re here.”
“I’m here for… well, quite a few things really.”
“Is that right?” I’m really interested to hear what those few things are, even though I already know they’re all about Quinn.
“Yeah. The first is to thank you for all you’ve done for Quinn.I don’t think her stay here would have been any other way if you weren’t around, or I suppose if things were tense between you two.”
I’m going to assume she knows everything. In the past, Bree and Quinn were as thick as thieves, and I don’t suppose anything much has changed between them.Only time.
“You’re very welcome. What’s the next thing?”
She gives me an uneasy look and sighs.
“Do you want to sit? Looks like you got a lot to say,” I point to the chair in front of me and she plants herself into it.
“Thank you, I hope I haven’t interrupted you.You look busy.”
