“It looks that way, ” says the gorgeous man I’m now officially dating.
I have the feeling the next few months are going to be very interesting. More and more I’m also finding that I get so lost in Logan when I’m with him I don’t think about anything else.
Chapter 39
Logan
Ethan laughs and takes a sip of his drink.“So I went all, go ahead make my day, on his ass.” He does his best Dirty Harry impression and I think even Clint Eastwood would be proud of that.
I start laughing too.
Ethan actually has a day off.A day off he’s taking instead of using it to catch up on work.We’re in the diner having a mega lunch of triple burgers with super-sized fries and a bottle of Jack D’s to share because I have to go back to work.
“You weirdo, you are totally an eighties child.”
“Sure thing Rambo.” He grins. “So, are you going to take the case?”
“I was just waiting for you to ask me that.”
“Of course I would. This is the chance to talk to you off the record and without the good captain sugar coating everything with the lure of a very handsome paycheck.”
“I know.”
Even though we were due to meet up forlunch, I knew he wanted to talk to me.
This has been quite the week.First, I got Quinn to agree to this no-strings relationship, then yesterday happened with a new contract opportunity I never saw coming.
From the moment we got here and Ethanchose the booth in the back, I knew he wanted to talk shop.
The case he’s referring to is what sprung from Billy’s investigation and subsequent conviction.Following that the Feds started investigatingJackson Fairchild, his asshole father.And that’s where I come in because I’m the only person who successfully managed to investigate Billy without getting burned by his old man.It’s reasonable to assume it’s going to be even harder to get shit on the man himself, and I might be their best shot.
The investigation so far shows dirty dealings similar to what Peter Cambray got up to, and it turned out those two had been rubbing shoulders for years.
There was also a reason why it was hard to point fingers at Billy.His father seemed to have been covering his back for years.The recent murders and the kidnappings weren’t the only crimes he was guilty of.In that basement were older photos of women who’d gone missing years ago.Billy Fairchild was a serial predator.
And they need me to discover what kind of monster his father is.
The pay they’re offering me is more than what I make a year.And that’s not even the good part.What’s good is the opportunity to work with the FBI.It’s the kind of job that’s going to lead to bigger things, I’d be an idiot to say no to.
“I’m still thinking about it,” I reply and I’m thankful he doesn’t look as shocked by my answer as Captain Brogan did when he posed the offer to me yesterday.
“Because the job is going to ground you in Wilmington for a little over a year,” he fills in.It’s not a question. It’s a statement of fact.
I nod. “You think I’m crazy?”
“No.”
The feds want a thorough investigation on Jackson.They want to get him good for everything they suspect him for.
Past, present, and future.
It’s the future aspect that will ground me here because we have to wait for certain events to take place.There’s an upcoming securities fraud case involving another guy linked to him and then there’s the election next year.He’s also been linked to working with the mobsters who killed one of Jackson’s rivals.It’s a big investigation. If I took the job, I’d need to focus and I wouldn’t be able to leave and go to, for example, New York.
“We haven’t spoken much about Quinn this week,” he states.“I’m glad you guys are finally together again.Looks like you’re thinking way ahead though.”
“I just wanted to keep my options open.Savage Investigations can be anywhere.I make enough to have someone run the place for me here and I was thinking of traveling if I had to.This job would mean I couldn’t do that, or as often as I want.”
