They nodded, then leaned over to pop a kiss on my cheek before they went back to picking at their food. They kind of looked a little nervous.
I was about to ask them about it when Miles returned, and things turned to lighter conversations. I’d have to check in with Lyric later. Chaos stopped hiding his face from everyone. I wanted to wince every time I saw his black eye, but I also really, really, really wanted to find the guy who’d hit him and kick his ass. Pay him back tenfold.
At least Clucky had scared the bastard.
When no one else was looking, I kept feeding her pieces of cheese since that was apparently one of her favorite treats.
An hour after the party started, there was another knock at the door.
My stomach twisted and filled with butterflies.
Okay, so apparently there were enough nerves for both Miles and me after all.
I’d half expected Maggie not to show up, especially this late, but I was really glad she did. Glad and nervous as hell, but I tried not to show it.
Miles and I both reached the door, and before he opened it, he turned to me, asking, “Are you ready?”
“Not really.”
“Want me to make them wait?”
I snorted. “No. Go ahead.”
He stared at me for a long moment, then gave my forearm a squeeze before whispering, “If you need me to ask them to leave at any moment, just let me know, okay? I’ve got your back.”
That made me smile. “I know you do. Thanks. I’m ready.”
He gave me a nod and opened the door. “Hey, Maggie, it’s nice to see you again.”
Her voice said, “Right back atcha, Miles. I’m so sorry we’re so late. I got stuck at work with a difficult case, and it was a whole mess.” She waved that off. “Anyway, I’m really sorry.”
I wanted to ask her why she hadn’t texted, but instead, I stepped up beside Miles and said, “I’m glad you still came.”
She met my gaze. “Me too. I should’ve texted you, but I was rushing so much that I didn’t even think about it until we were walking up the sidewalk.”
That made me snort. “No worries.”
She nodded. “Anyway, this is my fiancé, Nash.”
“Good to meet you,” the guy standing next to my sister said in a deep voice.
Miles nodded and moved aside, gesturing them inside. “You too.”
When Maggie came in, she scanned the place before her eyes landed on me again, and she smiled. Then she walked over and pulled me into a big hug. “Good to see you, big brother.”
“You too, sis.”
Nash shook my hand and was all smiles as he took in Miles’s home. He seemed really nice, and from the look on Miles’s face, the guy had good energy.
I wasn’t sure if my boyfriend knew it or not, but whenever someone around him gave off bad vibes or bad, strong emotions, he got a little wrinkle in his brow that I always wanted to rub out. The fact that he didn’t have that and was even smiling slightly put this guy ahead of many others.
That was definitely a good sign for my sister.
I gestured for them to follow me into the dining room. “Come on in and meet everyone and eat. Please eat. We have so much food.”
We walked into the dining room, and Maggie’s eyes widened. “Wow. You made all this?” She looked at me, and I shook my head.
“Not me. Miles. He’s been cooking for two days straight.”
