“You damn right I would!”
“Hawk, let’s find out what’s up first. If he did it for dumb reasons, I’ll step aside and allow you to kick his ass.”
I laughed. “I just want to figure out what happened, so we’ll have something to give to their kid.”
“How far along is his wife?”
“Seven months.” Emotions filled my throat, and I held my breath. “Seven months and if he winds up dead, I don’t know how Mia will take it. She’s so in love with him.”
Silence.
“I used to be jealous of them.” I admitted out loud for the first time. “The love the two of them have is pure, you know? I never thought that kind of love existed. You don’t see that anymore—not really. But then again Ghoul and Eris...”
“You’ll find that.”
“Not with a gun on my hip.” I told him. “And I get it. Having a spouse who carries a gun for a living is scary. But I adore those two and I love them even more together.
“We’ll figure it all out.” He encouraged me. “Once we do, I’ll help you find your very own Kingston. Listen, Hawk, about this morning.”
“You don’t have to explain.”
“Yeah, I do.” Angel glanced over at me then back at the road. “I didn’t know what you wanted from what—from us sleeping together. I’m under no delusions that it has to mean anything, and I was trying—”
“To figure it out?”
“Yeah.”
“Sorry, I jumped to conclusions. It’s been a while for me, you know?”
Angel nodded.
The truth was, I had stopped believing in the husband, the kids and the home. It was as if I couldn’t leave enforcement alone. From the Army, to being a cop—my entire life had been surrounded by brute force.
My update to Mia wasn’t much of a one. She was frustrated and worried and inching closer and closer to nine months. I was quickly running out of time. By the time I got off the phone with her, I felt as if someone hand used my kidneys for a punching bag.
The next call was to my captain. I told him enough to have him believe I was making progress, but not enough for him to relay to anyone else—just in case.
On my way down the hall, Angel’s conversation swam along to me. I paused—though I didn’t mean to eavesdrop.
“Cadmus, are you some place you can talk?” Angel asked. “Good. Listen, I need a solid.”
He proceeded to give this Cadmus person all the details plus the address in Mexico. “Yeah—just gather whatever information you can get for us…as soon as you can get it.”
Angel laughed. “Of course—seems like a fair trade. I’ll talk to Romeo about it. Cool, hit me back when you have something.”
The conversation ended and before I could move, another male voice rang out through the house calling for Angel. Tiberius barked once before his nails clicked across the hardwood floor.
“Hey, Ty.” The voice greeted the dog. “You aren’t covered in mud—how comes?”
“Don’t encourage him.” Angel laughed.
I left where I was standing and descended the stairs to find a man kneeling beside Tiberius, rubbing his head. He was white, shaved head—and when he looked up—he had the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. Though nervous I offered him a smile.
“Hi.” He said. “Romeo Mason.”
“Um—Sasha Bracken.”
“Hawk.” He nodded, rising to his feet. “Nice to meet you.”
