Romeo and I knew this man wasn’t going to win this argument. But it was fun watching him try. When we realize he was definitely going to get a bullet between the eyes, Romeo and I stepped forward.

“Listen.” The man tried again.

“No.” I growled. “You listen—finish your investigation and get the fuck out.”

“What if they come back?” The cop asked. “What if they send more men?”

“Then you’re going to have a hell of a lot more bodies to clean up.” Romeo told him. “It’s obvious you’re in way over your head.”

The man huffed but I didn’t care. Nikau parked across the street and jogged over. A few cops tried stopping him, but I made them back off. He ducked under the yellow tape and hurried into the house.

“What the actual fuck?” Nikau asked, pressing his forehead to mine then turning to look at Hawk.

“I’m okay.” She told him before he could ask.

“Anyone hurt?” Nikau asked after tenderly touching Hawk’s cheek.

“And you are?” The cop questioned. “Nikau Kora—Angel is my friend. What happened here?”

“No, we’re okay.” Romeo replied. “If you have no further questions for us?”

“I have one.” The cop looked around. “Where’s the dog?”

My back went up then. The rule was, if a dog bit a human, they would mostly put him down. But they would get to Tiberius over my dead body.

Hawk gripped my arm. “They broke into the dog’s home. Whatever he did to them was out of self defence. Walk—away.”

Romeo left after giving me a nod that I could read loud and clear. He was off to stay with Tiberius, to ensure the pup was okay.

It took them a while to leave and take the bodies with them. When they did finally leave, Ghoul, Eris and Dude entered. While I packed, they rallied around Hawk, ensuring she didn’t need anything. Though Ghoul and Eris offered for us to stay with them, I figured the less people around Hawk at the moment, the better.

“I’ll stay behind and oversee the workers Ghoul will be sending over.” Romeo volunteered. “In the meantime, I need you guys to get some sleep then end this, you hear me?”

I nodded.

Ghoul took me aside while Eris fussed over Hawk and while Dude got in touch with Tex.

“Where’s Cam?” I asked.

“We dropped her off at Dude’s on our way in.” Ghoul replied. “Are you sure you want to stay at a hotel tonight? I’d think you’d want to stay with family.”

“I would.” I glanced over my shoulder. “But I want to—I—”

“You want to be alone with her.” Ghoul nodded. “The two of you together now?”

“I don’t know.” I replied honestly. “We’ve slept together. Tonight, I just want her to feel safe, get a chance to decompress.”

“She’s tough. She’s like Goddess.”

I nodded again. “I know. But for my peace of mind—I guess it’s to soothe the alpha in me, I want to make sure she doesn’t have a concussion. And I realize how close I came to losing her and um…” I looked over my shoulder again. “It rattled me. I’m still trying to stop shaking.”

“Okay, say no more. I have a friend at the Lucien. I’ll call and get a suite for you guys.” Ghoul promised. “Take whatever time you need. I’m going to stay here with Romeo and make sure the workers do what they need to do.”

“Thanks.”

“Eris is helping her pack an overnight bag.” Ghoul told me. “I’m sure she won’t want to be away from this case for longer than she needs to be.”

I sighed.
