I dragged him backward into my hiding spot and slammed his head into the wall. When I released him, he fell to the floor like a wet sack.

When I nodded to Hawk, she attacked.

I watched as she leapt from her hiding space, blade poised.

When the man fell, I acted as her backup as she tried getting Kingston to look at her.

“Come on, King.” She spoke, cutting the ropes around his wrists and ankles. “If you wanted to visit Mexico again, why didn’t you just say so.”

Kingston grunted. “Don’t make me laugh. I think they broke a few of my ribs.”

“Can you walk?” She asked.

“I’m going to have to.” He replied. “Who’s he?”

“Boyfriend.” Hawk replied. “Wrap your arms around my shoulders.”

“Boyfriend?” Kingston granted. “How long was I gone?”

“You got jokes now?” Hawk asked.

“Guys.” Romeo called. “We have incoming! Whatever you’re doing—do it now.”

“Shit.” Tex swore. “Do any of you have your target yet?”

“We have King.” Hawk replied. “He’s banged up but we’re on the move again.”

“Good.” Eris spoke up. “Because Cadmus and Dude may need a hand.”

It was at that moment, the familiar echoes of gunshots rang out through the night sky. We hurried back the way we’d come, coming across new men hellbent on taking us out. I had to switch from my blade to a gun, clearing our path to freedom.

“Get Kingston to safety.” I told Hawk. “I’m heading to help the others.”

“Romeo, break cover,” Tex called. “Head back to assist.”

“Roger.” Romeo replied.

“I’m not leaving you.” Hawk told me.

“Kingston is in no shape to fight.” I reminded her. “And he won’t find the transport if we let him go alone. Take him back. I’ll be fine.”

She swore under her breath just as Romeo stepped through the bushes to our left after announcing himself. Hawk handed Kingston over to Romeo who slung his rifle across his back and pulled a handgun.

“Let’s go,” Hawk said.

Not wanting to waste time arguing, I nodded to Romeo who took off with Kingston. Hawk and I rushed toward the pandemonium, taking people out as we went. When we finally arrived, Cadmus pushed Keegan behind him toward us and turned to offer cover fire.

“Where’s Dude?” I asked.

“I’m not sure.” Cadmus replied. “He was offering cover from the other side while I free the kid.”

With the floor littered with bodies, someone stepped through a far door using Dude as a huma shield. I supposed that answered my question.

“Which of you is Hawk?” The man with the gun to our friend’s head asked.

She moved to step forward and I grabbed her arm. But Hawk merely winked at me and pushed her way past Keegan and Cadmus.

“I’m Hawk.” She told him. “But only my friends call me that. You and I, aren’t friends.”
