The end of the second week rolled around and I was just returning from a run with the police recruits when someone hollered my name. I looked up to find Romeo waving at me.
Dismissing the group, I jogged over. “What’s up?”
He pointed toward my office and I looked up. The last person I expected to be watching us through the window as Eris. I wasn’t ready to deal with anyone from Hawk’s world.
Romeo patted my shoulder and lead Tiberius back to where a group of exhausted marine potentials stood. When they saw him, they cheered and hunched down immediately to give him pats.
I smiled then turned my attention to the steps leading into my office.
Though covered in mud, I stepped through the doors and removed my hat. “Eris.”
“Hey.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“I wanted to see how you were.” She replied.
I motioned to a chair. “Please, have a seat. Do you want something to drink?”
She shook her head. “You haven’t been returning my calls.”
“Hawk and I aren’t together anymore.” I told her. “You know that, right?”
“I know.”
“And she’s your best friend.”
“I know that too, Angel what’s your point?”
“My point is there isn’t a reason for you to care.” I snapped.
Immediately, I closed my eyes and paused for a cleansing breath. When I faced her again, she was watching me with contemplative eyes while rubbing her stomach.
“You shouldn’t have made the trek over here.” I told her. “That can’t be good on your body and for the baby.”
“I’m pregnant, Angel. Not fragile.” She frowned. “Look, just because you and Hawk aren’t together anymore, doesn’t mean you stop being a part of this. You messed up when you walked in. We’re not letting you go.”
“We?”
“Ghoul, me, Dude the smart-ass Texan?” Her hand paused on her stomach and she winced.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“This kid will not settle down.” Eris grinned. “Being pregnant is an experience, I tell you. Anyway, from what I hear, you didn’t do anything wrong. Hawk gets a little hot tempered when she’s stressed out. Then she holds on to these grudges and by the time she digs herself out of it, she realizes it’s too late. Sorta like swimming out into the ocean and then looking up and realize you can’t see land anymore.”
“And I get that.” I rested my ass on the edge of my desk to face her. “We all have our moments. But for her to leave for two weeks? She hasn’t picked up any of my calls. She hasn’t returned any of my messages, not even a text. I can’t do this with her. I refuse to be with a woman who can’t even have a conversation with me. No matter how much I care for her, it won’t work.”
Eris sighed. “I know.”
“Have you spoken to her?”
“I have.”
“And she’s okay?”
“She’s alive.”
“Eris…”
