Nikau smirked.

With him gone, I rose to pour us another drink. I then called Shane who worked with Nikau and set him in motion.

“Is he really going to drop his business to come home because you need a favour?” Sasha questioned.

“Yes.” I looked back at her. “Is that strange?”

“A little.” Sasha admitted. “I mean, I have good friends, but business is important.”

“Have you had lunch?” I asked her.

“Not yet. Why?”

“Well, I could order a pizza.”

“You don’t have to do that.” Sasha smiled, handing me a business card. “I’ve interrupted your day enough as is. I’m going to head back to the hotel and put my feet up. Could you give me a call once Nikau is back and settled?”

I didn’t push. She was a woman, and I was a strange man. Trusting me must be hard, even though I was friends with Amelia. Instead, I nodded and walked her to the door. I watched from the front steps as she climbed into a black SUV and sped away from the curb.

What was happening to her partner was indeed suspicious and to disappear on his way to EOC, added another creep factor. I figured Nikau could set up the behind the scenes passes then help us with canvassing the actual venue.

Curious, I called my friend in Oklahoma to ask about Sasha. He had nothing but nice things to say about her. He wasn’t so sure about her partner though. Apparently, the man’s been acting weird ever since his wife became pregnant, but no one really paid it any attention.

I understand acting weird after finding out his lady was pregnant. A baby had always been big news—it would change everything in his life.

Then Sasha flew out to California to visit her friends and the wheels seemed to have fallen off.

“Listen, you know his wife?” I asked.

“Yeah. She’s very pregnant right now.” He replied. “People round here is saying Kingston ran off. That’s bullshit. Ain’t no way he’d have done that.”

“Do me a solid and keep an eye on her for me.” I told him. “I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.”

“You got it. I’ll call if anything.”

After getting off the phone, I was even more suspicious about what was going on.

I called Amelia and her husband’s face filled the screen.

“Angel,” Wraith greeted me. “Hang on, I’m trying to get her out of the bathroom. Why do women take so long in the bathroom?”

“That’s why I’m single.” I chuckled.

“I mean, damn. Someone could have warned me.” Wraith smirked.

“I heard that!” Amelia called from the background.

Wraith grinned proudly. “Aww come on, Blackbird. Don’t be upset. Angel is calling for you.”

“Is it a video call?” Amelia called.

“Oui.” Wraith replied. “How have you been, Angel?”

“Tired.” I replied. “Spent the last few months putting together the camp. We had our first recruits start last week. I’m finally taking some time off with Tiberius.”

“Tiberius?”

I turned the camera so he could see the Doberman chewing on a bone in the center of the room.
