“Of course!” She laughed.

Whatever she said next was nothing but static.

“Leta?” I called. “Hello?”

“I said I love you!” She yelled.

“Love you—”

The line went dead. I frowned down at the phone to see the call had indeed ended.

I sighed.

“She okay?” Nikau asked.

“Yeah—but there is very little signal where she is.” I told him while shoving the phone into my pocket. “I don’t like it when she goes to these remote places.”

“You can’t protect her from everything.” Nikau patted his shoulder.

“Yeah—I know that. I don’t like it, but I know.”

Hawk had returned to the room and I could tell something had changed in her. She cleared her throat and scratched the back of her neck. “I’ve managed to rope Ghoul into helping us. Metal and Ghoul is closed today for inspections and he doesn’t mind. Eris will come by at some point with Camille. Not sure if I’m okay with that but Cam will be musing around with her boyfriend and away from all of this.”

I smiled. “Of course.”

“Okay.” Hawk exhaled, looking from Nikau to me. “You have your marching orders.”

Nikau exited the room and I reached for Hawk’s arm. “You okay?”

“Yeah.” She tugged her arm from me and left me standing alone in the office.

Chapter 5

Hawk

To keep my mind clear of Angel, I worked on my own. Ghoul arrived not too long afterward with Camille, Patrick and Eris. Patrick and Camille were sent off with VIP passes. It seemed the teens were developing a love of cars and were over the moon to have unrestricted access. Though I was uncomfortable with Eris wandering off on her own due to her advance stage of pregnancy, Eris didn’t give me much of a choice. I didn’t want her really in the midst of whatever this mess was.

“It you see anything, call us,” I reminded Eris. “Don’t take these guys on yourself.”

“Dude, I’m army. I can take care of myself.” Eris frowned.

“I know that. But you’re pregnant.” I told her.

Though she didn’t seem impressed, I wasn’t going to apologise. Keeping her safe was very important.

I wandered around the venue leisurely, ensuring I searched every male face I came across, looking for some familiarity or something suspicious. Still, my mind would switch back to Angel, wondering if he kissed Leta the way he’d kissed me.

Shit, that shouldn’t have been my thought. My thought should have been how dare he kissed me when he knew hew as in love with someone else. Maybe after I had a chance to strip down and wash his scent off my skin, I’d be able to think straight.

I sighed and stopped to take picture of a model car. As I moved closer to the information stand, movement caught the corner of my eyes. I shifted slightly and tilted my head. The man standing just steps from me wasn’t Kingston, but he looked familiar.

The car dropped to the back of my mind and I moved around a few people trying to get close to this person without raising suspicion.

If I could get closer, I could see him fully and figure out where I’d seen him before. He began moving away from me and I followed. From time to time, he stopped to look at a vehicle or another.

Finally, he walked over to another man and they fell into a close conversation with another man. After a few seconds, the conversation became a little more animated. I went a little closer and could barely make out what was being said over the din. I frowned. There was no way to move next to them without drawing attention. I’d lose them especially if one of them recognized me.

The two men disappeared behind the curtains and I swore under my breath. Glancing around, I hurried to the opposite end of the curtains and peeked around to find the two men arguing.
