My sense was Tiberius grew too big, too fast and they had no idea what to do about it.
Leaving him be, I headed up the stairs, plugged my cell in to charge and closed myself off in the bathroom for a shower.
By the time I was out, Tiberius was lying in the middle of my bed playing with a rope.
“Spoiled pooch.” I teased while tossing a cushion at him. “You’re still damp.”
Tiberius caught it in his mouth, dropped it beside him then growled at me. I scratched his belly, then his back and head. He rolled over, giving me better access to his belly and I obliged him with scratches.
“You’re so lucky you’re cute.” I kissed him between the eyes.
The loud dong of the doorbell drew my attention. Tiberius was not impressed with the disruption. He growled and made for the door. I sighed—I still wasn’t able to break him from that habit. Nik rationalized it was because Tiberius thought it was his duty to protect me as I was now a part of his pack— Tiberius thought he had to protect the home to keep me safe.
Still, I had him sit in the living room. When I glanced back, Tiberius’ head was sticking out in the hall as he watched me move toward the door.
I sighed and opened it.
The woman standing there wasn’t a face I’d seen before.
Oh gawd, I would have remembered that face.
She had pretty green eyes, dark hair tied up in a sensible ponytail. As far as I could tell the only makeup she wore was a bit of lip gloss.
When I focused, I could tell she was a cop.
“Yes?” I asked.
“I’m Detective Sasha Bracken.” She held up a badge.
“Oklahoma. A little out of your jurisdiction, aren’t we?” I questioned.
“I’m actually not really here on official business.” She tossed wayward strand of black hair over her shoulder. “People tend to appreciate the badge, so I figured I’d try.”
I quirked a brow. “Not really here on official business.”
“I’m working on something and a friend of mine said you may be able to help me.” She told me. “Or knows someone who may be able to help me. Her name is Amelia Snyder.”
A smile crossed my lips. Amelia was Hemmingway when I’d met her. She was working in the financial industry. Her life exploded while I was deployed and though I wanted to go to her, I couldn’t.
Being deployed wasn’t conducive to dropping everything and rushing to help a friend on the other side of the world.
A part of the fine print, it seemed.
It damn near killed me.
“Amelia.” I exhaled. “You should come in.”
Tiberius stepped into the hall and Sasha froze.
“He’s a Teddy bear.” I promised her. “He just looks like a terror.”
“He’s all black.” Sasha mused. “I’ve never seen an all black Doberman before.”
“He’s special.” I chuckled. “Detective, meet Tiberius.”
“Tiberius—Star Trek fan?”
I laughed. “Huge.”
