I wanted to cry. “Maybe he felt bad.”

“Really?” Nitro asked. “That’s what you’re going with? There’s more to it than that, Bailey. Don’t mess this up.”

“Nitro, he can’t stay.” I told her. “At the end of the training with Justice, he’ll get on a plane and he’ll be gone. He has no reason to stay.”

“Then give him a reason to.” Nitro pleaded. “Or at least give him the opportunity to make that decision for himself. Don’t make it for him.”

I closed my eyes as my head began throbbing.

“Knock, knock.”

Dude stuck his head into the room.

I smiled at him.

“Hello, beautiful lady.” He grinned handsomely. “How are you feeling?”

“Better.” I told him. “The doctor said I’m getting there. Thanks.”

He sat on the other side of my bed and exhaled. “I’m stopping in to say goodbye. Jasmine is dropping me at the airport.”

“What?” I asked. “I wanted to cook for you—you know? The real stuff.”

Dude laughed. “This won’t be the last time you’ll see me, Bailey. Don’t even think of trying to get rid of me.”

“Maybe next time you can bring your wife.” I told him. “You can stay with me and I’ll show you guys the magic of this island.”

“Be careful what you offer.” Dude smirked.

“I ain’t scared.” I grinned. “Seriously, any time.”

“Thank you.” Dude tapped my nose playfully before leaning in for a hug.

“Be safe.” I told him.

“You keep in touch.”

I nodded.

He hugged Nitro and after a quick wink at me, he disappeared out the door.

“I’m going to go out so Rei can come in.” Nitro rose. “And Barbie flew back to German last night. Crash is still here as a part of the training at the base. He’s staying with Rei.”

I sighed. I wish I could have thanked Barbie in person, show them all a good time—it was the least I could do for all they’d done for me.

“Thanks.” I managed.

Nitro said nothing. She stepped through the door and I closed my eyes trying to stop the migraine beginning behind my right eye.

“Hoshi?”

I sighed and turned my head toward his voice. “Mmm?”

“How are you feeling?” Rei asked.

“A slight headache.” I opened my eyes to look into his face.

I could see it then.
