Unsure of what to do, I turned off all the fires I’d been using, and walked around the island to pull her into my chest.
But she didn’t really cry.
She didn’t return my embrace.
Nella sighed.
When she lifted her head and I looked down into her eyes, she lifted her lips to mine. I reached a hand between us to hold her throat to keep her mouth away from me. I melted at the warmth of her caramel skin, pulsing with life against my palm.
She pushed up and brushed her mouth against mine.
I growled and gave in to her. I kissed her roughly, sucking her tongue into mine mouth then nipping at her lips. I kissed her until she moaned, and her arms came up around my back.
I gripped her arms and pulled them behind her back, and she whimpered.
Reluctantly, I released her arm and peeled my body from hers. We were both panting heavily. For the first time since she entered the room, I took a good look at her—the black shirt dropping midthigh on her, exposing soft thighs. At the neck the soft swells of her breath drove me mad.
I wanted so desperately to kiss every part of her until she sighed and melted for me.
“No good for you, Kid?” She asked, her voice cracking.
Nella slipped from the stool and walked slowly from me as she unbuttoned her shirt. I turned my head away and closed my eyes.
“That’s okay.” She told me.
Nella made a face when I looked at her again. “I know you’re with her and I should be ashamed for what I’m thinking. I never wanted to be the other woman. I’m sorry for putting you in this position. Oh God, I’m a horrible person!”
She pressed her forehead to the enter of my chest, her tears soaking through my shirt.
“You don’t want me, Nella.” I managed. “You’ve said the words. I don’t think we should—”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I’m tired. Could I just rest for a little while, then I promise to leave.” She exhaled loudly. “Just for about an hour and then I’ll b eon my way. Just—.”
Without speaking, I scooped her into my arms and carried her to my bedroom. I set her in the center of my bed and pulled the sheets up to her neck.
“I’ll bring you something to eat.” I pushed her dark hair from her forehead and placed a kiss to the side of her head. “Rest.”
“I’m sorry.” Nella rasped.
She gave me a small smile and closed her eyes.
Tears rolled down the side of her head.
