I was still sore, but the world didn’t stop because I was a little banged up. While Kid and Demon went to check out some other properties Emmitt owned, and to meet with Chelsea’s cop friend, Mamba headed to his studio to do a job.

I still had to speak to my mother and the brothers weren’t happy about me being on my own. After the last attack in the taxi, Kid was nervous leaving me and insisted I drive.

They would be sending their friend Sean to be my guard the second he was finished his classes for the day.

Jia and Chelsea were assigned to watch my mother’s place to see who visited aside from us. Since Chelsea was the one with photography skills, it made sense.

But I worried about her because of the baby.

“It’s just in case the kidnappers try contacting her any other way.” Kid explained while flipping through a book. He frowned and set it back on the shelf then face me. “We need to cover all the bases.

I’d swallowed the lump in my throat. And the conversation hadn’t ended until we had Chelsea put her friend Malik on standby.

I pulled myself back to the present to explain to my mother why I was there.

Kid suspected she was responsible for what happened to his car. And after thinking it through, I couldn’t even take her side.

“I’m exhausted mama.” I told her. “Now is not the time to go silent on me. I need to know what you did.”

“He thinks I did what?” Jade shrieked. “How dare he? I have better things to do with my time.”

“You don’t get another chance, Mother!”

“You can’t possibly think I had anything to do with any of that.”

“I don’t hear you denying it.”

“I don’t have to.” Jade tossed her hands up.

I smiled and shook my head. “Kid is angry. And rightly so. The only reason why he hasn’t been to your doorsteps yet, is because of me. But if you keep lying to me, I’ll step out of the way and you can deal with him.”

“I’m your mother!”

“Madre de Dios!”I rubbed my eyes. “Being my mother does not give you an all-inclusive right to ruin my life!”

“Don’t raise your voice at me!”

“It doesn’t give you that right to mess with the people I care about!”

“And you care for this—this—delinquent more than your own mother?”

“Here it comes.” I laughed bitterly. “You’re guilting me. You’re actually trying to guilt me. Unbelievable. Kid does not have a record!”

“Those tattoos? Of course, he has a record.”

I couldn’t control the frown to spread my face. “Like I said, Kid is man enough to let me handle this. But if I get nothing from you, I’ll back off and let him deal with it in his way.”

“You can’t scare me. And it’s not fair to threaten me.”

“If you’re not scared that’s on you.” I snapped. “He’s helping to save your grandson’s life and you couldn’t even control your hatred long enough for that to happen. But thankfully, Kid’s a much better person than you and he’s helping Jeremy anyway. When this is over, you’re going to have to pay the piper.”

“You seem to think he’s God.” She scoffed. “He’s not.”

“You’re right.” I gathered my things and stood. “You’re right. He’s not God. He’s karma.”

“What’s the difference.”
