I covered my face and cried.

Calie never wanted mama to have her son. And I thought I was doing the right thing when Calie died. I wasn’t old enough to be anyone’s guardian.

“The will was brought to me by a law clerk from another lawyer.” Thien asked. “By then Calie was sick. I merely took charge of it.”

“So, it could have been switched.” Sean pointed out.

“Yes.” Thein admitted.

Sean rubbed my back. “Want me to call Kid?” He asked.

I sniffled and accepted the Kleenex Thien offered then handed him the letter to read it. I figured he’d know what I needed to do.

“No. I’ll talk to him once we get back. Right now, he’s occupied.”

“What can I do?” Sean pushed.

I rested a palm on his arm and offered him a shaky smile. “You’re already doing it.”

“I’ll begin the paperwork now to shift guardianship from your mother to you.” Thien spoke once he’d read the letter. “Chances are, she’s going to fight it. I need to prepare myself for that.”

That didn’t surprise me. “What do I need to do now?”

“Nothing for now.” Thein told me. “Say nothing about this letter.”

“I can do that. In the meantime, I need to find Jeremy.” I sighed.

“What do you mean? What’s going on?” Thein asked.

“We think he was kidnapped. They tried calling mama, but she hung up on them.” I reported. “Right now, we’re working to find him safely.”

“Um—okay. I’m going to pretend I didn’t know that.” Thien told us. “That way, it won’t cause any issues later.

I understood.

“While you guys work to find him.” Thien folded the letter again. “I’ll begin paperwork. We want it so that we can move him to you as soon as possible after he’s found.”

I agreed.

After filling out some paperwork, we left the office.

Outside, the sun was hidden behind white clouds, and the temperature dropped to the perfect coolness. I stopped, closed my eyes and lifted my face, inhaling deeply, trying to calm my nerves and slow the swirling thoughts in my head.

“Nella?” A feminine voice called. “Hey!”

I opened my eyes and looked toward the sound. Helen jogged over to hug me.

“Helen!” I hugged her back and laughed. “Fancy seeing you here. What’s going on?”

“My sister is a law clerk in the building next door,” Helen explained. “I stopped by to bring her some coffee. She’s the kind of person who will work all day without a break because she loves her job. I’m trying to get her to take small breaks—hence the fuel. Who is this?”

I blushed, embarrassed that I’d almost forgotten that Sean was with me. “I’m sorry. Helen Sampson, Meet Sean Hannigan. Sean, my guardian angel, Helen.”

The two shook hands, Sean bowing over Helen’s hand like a knight.

She giggled. “It’s lovely to meet you.” Helen glanced over to me then back at Sean.

“Likewise.” He released her hand.
