Kid
After Malik did some digging, we had a meeting—minus Demon as he wanted to hover close to home. Chelsea had been having some cramping which worried him.
Turned out they were what the doctor was calling fake labour. Even so, Demon was scared of leaving her side.
I was both jealous and proud of him at the same time.
I knew Nella wanted to be there for Chelsea, to be the best friend she should be. But with the situation, Nella was curled up against my side while Malik told us his superior wasn’t going for the case.
They didn’t have much evidence against Emmitt and because wetrespassedto get the picture of the backpack, it would be admissible in court.
In other words, we were right back where we started.
“That can’t be right.” Nella sighed. “I know that’s his. We can’t give up.”
“We aren’t going to.” Malik told us.
“But you were told not to work on the case.” Nella pushed.
Malik smiled at her. “Just pretend I’m not here. I’m not about to let a child get hurt because they can’t see pass the glitter of Emmitt’s Rolex.”
“Oh.” Nella sighed.
Malik winked at her. “Don’t worry, Nella. I’m seeing this one through. Now, we can do one of two things.”
“We’re listening.” Mamba leaned back in his seat.
“We could haunt him until he becomes paranoid and move the kid.” Malik pointed out. “That way, we can catch him in the act. Or you guys could go in and get the kid if he’s on the property.”
“If we do the second one, he gets away with it.” Nella leaned away from me to level her gaze on Malik. “It would then be his word against ours because apparently Jeremy’s life isn’t worth very much.”
I reached for her hand, but she merely yanked it away.
“What are the risks in option one?” She pushed.
“There could be a chase, a shootout if these guys are serious about getting away.” Malik explained. “We’d have to play it just right. We don’t want Jeremy getting hurt.”
“Okay—what exactly did you find out about Emmitt?” Sean asked.
Malik shrugged. “The usual. I think he’s one of those assholes who never get their hands dirty. So, we can’t get him on anything like that. The sad thing is, he might get away again even if we find out he has something to do with this.”
“Maybe we could get a friend of ours involved.” Kid muttered. “But we will deal with that later. Right now, we need to find a way to confirm Jeremy is on that property. The drone didn’t help. We need more time to get in there and look around.”
“I can’t go in with you.” Malik told us. “You’re going to have to watch your back and not get caught.”
“Okay, we’ll go with option one.” Nella made the decision. “We’ll force them to move Jeremy then get him that way.”
“Sean and I will take first watch.” I spoke up. “Nella and Mamba, you take Emmitt’s place. Malik, what do you know about drones?”
“Operated one in the army, why?” Malik replied.
“Well, we could use the extra eyes,” I told him.
“I can do that.” Malik agreed. “Give me an hour and I’ll be back.”
Sean headed out for a cigarette and Mamba exhaled loudly and settled back against the sofa. “We’ll start first thing in the morning.”
I nodded.
